Mental Health is part of Safety Awareness

One of the more difficult barriers to helping others who are suffering from mental health conditions is the old saying “seeing is believing”. Those who are physically injured are counted in our safety statistics but those that suffer mental health issues are rarely counted. One of the biggest reasons is that mental health harm typically happens out of sight. The non-visibility of these instances allows skepticism; if we can’t see harm, it probably doesn’t exist or the person claiming harm is “faking it”.
The conventional safety culture in companies is ensuring everything administratively, mechanically, or materialistically is in place so people don’t get hurt. Although this plays a role, there is a significant role in the individuals themselves and their internal wellbeing.
Although control and compliance are normally how leaders in health and safety gain trust, respect, and hard honest work from workers, caring about one’s struggles, health, beliefs, culture, and ideas is at the heart of Kasteel. We understand that there is a rising global issue of mental health and we support our team members by providing recourses and support for anyone that opens up about their struggles. We not only care this way about our team, but that care also extends to the people that choose Kasteel to come into their homes and businesses.

Some indicators of mental health issues you may see are:
1. Feeling anxious or worried
2. Emotional outburst
3. Quiet or withdrawn
4. Changes in behavior or feelings

You can support someone struggling by:
1. Listening to them
2. Connecting with them on a personal level
3. Empower them
4. Provide useful recourses
