A statement from Foxwood Painting
We’ve debated whether to say anything regarding the posts currently being shared about our business, but we feel there is one important point that deserves to be addressed.
A customer absolutely has the right to contact a business if they are unhappy with something. We also have the right to ask questions before determining how, when, and whether a return visit is appropriate.
When a customer tells us that something needs to be touched up, our first responsibility is to understand what happened. What area is the concern? What does the customer feel is wrong? What will be required to correct it? These aren’t questions being asked to avoid responsibility — they are questions being asked so that we can properly assess the situation and arrive prepared with the appropriate time, materials and solution.
We have always been willing to discuss legitimate concerns with our customers and, when something genuinely needs attention, we are happy to work toward a solution.
What we are not required to do is accept disrespectful messages, accusations, insults, or demands simply because someone is unhappy with the outcome of a job.
There is a difference between saying, “I’m not happy with this and I’d like you to come take a look,” and making accusations about someone’s honesty, competence or character while refusing to have a reasonable conversation about what actually needs to be addressed.
Being a small business does not mean we have to tolerate being spoken to disrespectfully. We can stand behind our work and maintain boundaries around how we are treated.
We also want to be clear that we will not be sharing screenshots of our private conversations with a customer. We believe that private conversations should remain private, even when a disagreement arises. We have chosen not to put those conversations publicly on display out of respect for the customer’s privacy.
If the customer chooses to share those conversations herself, that is entirely her decision. We are comfortable with the full conversation being seen, because we know the questions we asked, the offers we made to understand and address the concerns, and the manner in which we communicated.
At a certain point, after the private communication became increasingly aggressive and included threats, we made the decision to close that particular avenue of communication. That was not a refusal to communicate or an unwillingness to address the customer’s concerns. Our business line of communication has remained open and is available should the customer wish to pursue the matter through a formal and respectful channel.
And on a more personal note, seniors make up a large part of our clientele. Many of the wonderful people who have trusted us with their homes are seniors, and we genuinely value that trust. To have our business publicly characterized as one that “scams seniors” is honestly heartbreaking.
We reopened Foxwood Painting to support our family and our homestead, and we have worked incredibly hard to build our business on honesty, fair pricing, quality workmanship and treating people with respect. The idea that we would intentionally take advantage of someone — particularly the very clientele who have supported us so much — is incredibly upsetting.
We aren’t interested in arguing publicly or turning a customer disagreement into a spectacle.
We simply believe respect needs to go both ways. A business can listen to a complaint, ask reasonable questions, and determine the appropriate way forward without being subjected to insults, accusations or demands.
We will always be willing to have a respectful conversation. We will not, however, accept being bullied into one.
Finally, to all of our current and past clients who have taken the time to leave us such wonderful reviews, recommend us to friends and family, and continue to trust Foxwood Painting with your homes — thank you.
Your kind words and continued support mean more to us than you probably realize. This is our livelihood, but it’s also something we take genuine pride in. We are incredibly grateful for every person who has welcomed us into their home and allowed us to be a part of their painting projects.
We’ll continue to show up, work hard, communicate honestly, and do our very best for every client who puts their trust in us. Thank you for continuing to support our small business. ❤️ 🦊
