Why does your tile floor feel colder in fall?
As temperatures drop, tile floors can start feeling noticeably colder, especially in bathrooms, kitchens and basements.
But the tile itself is not always the main reason.

Here are a few things that can affect how cold the floor feels:
• What is underneath the tile
Concrete slabs, basements and poorly insulated subfloors can transfer cold through the entire floor assembly.
• The room itself stays cooler
Bathrooms, basements and rooms with exterior walls often lose heat faster, which makes tile feel even colder underfoot.
• There is no heated floor system
Tile conducts temperature very well. That is why radiant floor heating can make such a noticeable difference in spaces where comfort matters most.
• The heating system is not performing properly
If heated floors are already installed but still feel cold, the issue may be related to the thermostat, heating zones or the system itself.

Fall is usually when homeowners start noticing these things the most.
If you are planning a tile floor in a bathroom, basement or another colder area of the home, it is worth thinking about what is happening underneath the tile, not just how the surface will look.
