I recently consulted on a roof done by the red hot chili boys brothers roofing company in Winnipeg. While rectifying the several deficiencies, I removed 2
Plumbing vent flashings and the bathroom fan roof vent. I have a really hard time understanding why an installer would use this many nails on these items. 3-4nails on each would be sufficient. I honestly thought these guys did much cleaner work. I’m disappointed to see this type of workmanship.

With the cost of fuel, many contractors opt for a satellite image of a building so they can complete an estimate without having to leave their office. A few local companies will even give you an estimate for shingle replacement in under 2 minutes! The technology is fantastic but it has significant limitations. One of the things no satellite estimate can ever see is the condition of the roof decking under the shingles. The only way to see the deck condition is to get up close and personal with the roof. If damage like this is noted before the job begins, we will have the proper materials ready to install. Some installers are woefully equipped and may not be able to carry out this kind of repair. Some roofers are only roofers and may not have the skills necessary to do this type of repair.
By noticing large scale damage like this, my estimate will definitely be higher. I pretty certain that I priced myself out of this job by being thorough. It’s not the first time it’s happened and probably won’t be the last.

I absolutely hate these snow vents! They are a terrible design for several reasons. But I have never actually chewed on one myself. The neighborhood squirrel here seems to think they are delicious. Even if they do pass the taste test, the design is still horrible.

I was called out to inspect and repair a roof that was done by some guys that told the home owner “everything is easier with us”. The roof did not leak before it was reroofed. Only after the install. The “easy” guys came back 3 times. Once with silicone, once with tar, and once with metal flashing that was installed 6-8ft down water from where the leak was occurring. Then they stopped replying to the calls for repair.
As soon as I started to disassemble the shingles, I noticed that the shingles were not incorporated into the wall flashing properly. I continued to remove shingles along the wall to inspect the step flashing/roof intersection. I found that the step flashing had slid down on top of itself in one location and that the roof deck was in fact still wet! The installers ignored the incorrect spacing and laps of the step flashing and just nailed it in place as is! After consulting with the owner, they decided they just wanted the leak to stop and not have the entire section of the roof replace due to the soft spot of OSB. Since the soft spot was not in a foot traffic area, and there was no chance of collapse I agreed. Leak found and corrected. Turns out the “easy” guys were not so easy (or skilled). Now the home owner can fix the moldy drywall from 3 years of leaks.

I’ve done a lot of big jobs over 40 years that I’m pretty proud of. But it’s not only the big ones that make me smile. It took me a couple of tries to get this little piece of flashing to where I wanted it to be. The brickwork curved 4 different ways but after a couple hours of bending and fitting, up the ladder, down the ladder, it turned out great! In the middle of all this I was thinking “did the Golden Jet Bobby Hull spend this much time curving his new CCM hockey sticks?”

One of the masonry contractors we work with asked us to come up with a permanent solution to a recurring leak problem behind this chimney. The roof is a very steep pitch. The chimney is almost 9 feet wide. One side ends in a complex valley. Leaves, twigs and other debris would continually collect behind the chimney which would cause water running off the roof to go in directions that it shouldn’t. The solution we decided on was to create a water diverter behind the chimney to encourage the water to flow out from behind the chimney rather than collecting. It was an extremely difficult task as our work space was only 20 inches wide, 30 feet in the air, and hidden by a wall of bricks. The Malarkey shingles were almost impossible to separate so we could anchor wood to wood. The weight of the chimney caused the rafters and roof deck to warp. It was a real slow process but I’m happy with how our portion of the job went.

It’s a fantastic summer Saturday! it would be a great day on the beach,except Mother Nature doesn’t care if it’s August long weekend. The storm damage calls are still coming in.

It was a beautiful day to be inside an attic to change out an old bathroom fan unit. The insulation was pulled back and the old fan housing was removed. The torn vapour barrier was repaired. The new fan unit with a new flexible duct was installed and sealed in place. Our red seal electrician made the necessary connections. The insulation was replaced. You can’t even tell there was work done in the attic. Everything went smoothly and the homeowner is happy with a quiet fan that actually works.

This beautiful little wartime house had the shingles replaced. Whoever shingled it wasn’t very good with the flashing detail on the brick chimney. Their solution was to coat their new cap flashing with tar and hope for the best. It ended up leaking in spite of the heavy application of tar. I disassembled the shingles, and removed the old flashings. I used a different method of flashing on the chimney/shingles to hide the old tar scars. Everything went smoothly and the home owner is really pleased with how it looks now and the fact it no longer leaks.
