This is what modern marine construction actually looks like.

At the Port of Trois-Rivières, crews aren’t just upgrading infrastructure – they’re building a system designed to handle heavier loads, deeper-draft vessels and long-term performance in one of the most demanding environments.

At the centre of it all is a high modulus combi wall system where precision, co-ordination and timing matter at every step.

What most people don’t see is everything behind it:
steel manufactured in Europe, logistics across continents and installation on a tight schedule in Quebec.

This project brings together JD Fields & Company, ArcelorMittal, CIMA+, Pomerleau and the Trois-Rivières Port Authority, and shows what’s possible when engineering and ex*****on are fully aligned.

This issue isn’t going to play it safe.

For Issue 4 of Piling Canada, we’re focusing on Women in Deep Foundations – but not at a surface level.

We’re not looking for the usual talking points.

We want the stories that actually reflect what’s happening on jobsites, in hiring decisions and in leadership rooms.

What’s changing, and what isn’t?

What creates real opportunity?

And what conversations are still being avoided?

If you’re a contractor, engineer, supplier, industry leader or know someone whose perspective should be part of this, reach out.

Let’s build an issue that doesn’t just highlight the topic, but pushes it forward.

👇 What’s one thing this industry needs to do better when it comes to supporting women?

Some careers are chosen. Others are passed down and built over decades in the field.

In the deep foundations industry, that reality comes to life through Jim Humphries and his sons, Tom Humphries of Soletanche Bachy Canada Inc. and Barry Humphries of KELLER.

With more than 80 years of combined experience, their story reflects how knowledge, work ethic and leadership move from one generation to the next.

But this isn’t just a story about legacy. It’s about how the piling industry has evolved from mechanical systems to advanced hydraulic rigs, and what it takes to stay relevant through that change. It also raises bigger questions about mentorship, workforce development and how the industry attracts and trains the next generation.

If you work in construction, piling, or deep foundations, this perspective hits close to home.

At the heart of major infrastructure projects, the real challenge isn’t always what you can see; it’s what lies beneath.

Our latest project feature dives into the foundation work behind the Île d’Orléans Bridge, where rock-socketed piles play a critical role in ensuring long-term stability in complex ground conditions.

From drilling precision to managing subsurface uncertainty, this project highlights how data, engineering expertise and adaptability come together to reduce risk and improve outcomes. As one expert put it, geotechnical uncertainty is inevitable – you just decide when you pay for it.

Some people enter the piling industry. Others are born into it.

Our latest cover story explores the Sharp family legacy.

Three generations who have helped shape Canada’s deep foundations sector since the late 1950s.

It’s a story of mentorship, grit and evolution – where knowledge is passed down not just through training, but through lived experience on the jobsite.

From early days of manual techniques to today’s modern practices, their journey reflects how much the industry has changed and what hasn’t.

This is more than a family story. It’s a look at how legacy continues to influence the future of our industry.
