When I get a call about twisted or bowed metal framing, I know the spf contractor failed to take the precautionary step to first anchor (using the foam to first weld the metal stud to the concrete wall as seen in the photo). This locks in the stud preventing it from twisting due to high exothermic heat and secondly, from bowing out because of the expansion force of the foam. It’s a cautionary technique because trying to correct this problem after the fact requires you to dig out the foam!

Locking in those metal studs.
Problem with metal studs is that under the influence of 2lb foam they can twist and bow outwards. You might not notice it but wait until the drywall gets hung and the problem can be quite noticeable. Best to frame first and lock in the studs prior to filling the cavity as seen here.

Leaving an exposed basement ceiling that was painted flat black is ok, but the spray foam must be fire protected in the exposed rim joist pockets at the top of the wall. Here we are applying two coats of DC-315 which is an approved intumescent coating. It can now be painted over using only a “water-based” flat black paint to blend it in with the rest of the ceiling.
Please note: Only approved certified installers using the Canadian CCMC guidelines must be followed.

It’s Dormer Time!

Skylights and dormer attic windows are notorious for failure in Zone 7 Canada especially when a builder attempts to insulate these attic areas using conventional insulation. The only solution to seal them with 2lb close-cell foam. It’s called, “Getting it Right!” (Only initial pass completed.)

Renovation work is rather tricky to get it right! We have to seal it and put back better than what it was! That’s where 2lb close-cell spray foam shines! As an all-one-solution that forms an air barrier, vapour barrier, moisture barrier and a massive thermal barrier. There is no other type insulation that can do all this plus give you a monolithic encapsulation of the building envelope. Yes, you pay more but immediately you are saving more money starting the next day!

Completed a retrofit upgrade to increase energy efficiency and the comfort level within this wartime built home in the north end of Winnipeg. A micro-HVAC system will be added because we have significantly tightened the building envelope. Just spraying the below grade crawl space rim and pony wall had a huge impact. No more cold floors!

Never easy talking to a homeowner and the contractor who was unaware of limited approval use of these two tank froth pack insulation kits offered through just about every hardware store in Canada. They are only approved for air sealing around penetrations such as ductwork or plumbing and can only fill a gap no greater than 6”. The reason for this is the foam is not 2lb density but rather only 1.5 lb density which disqualifies it as a vapour barrier. In fact, the foam is not a moisture barrier and can absorb moisture. It’s actually R-value is also significantly less at about +|- 3.5 R-value per inch. These kits never spray consistently, depths vary and gaps straight to the exterior deck is common. Often as the tanks empty the risk of offer ratio pressure can cause an imbalance between the two chemicals which leads to an off-ratio hazardous material (raw chemicals) being installed on the building.
If inspected, the building inspector is obliged to Red Tag the job-site and demand its removal, which is very time consuming.
