The design concept behind the ’s West Portage and South Landing exterior play yards applies this to not only realize these dynamic spaces but also advance the organization’s motto, “everyone belongs here.”

Whether in a group or on their own, tree stumps, sand boxes, wooden a-frame retreats, stone markers, and fragrant shrubs and soft grass encourage kids to explore small pockets of nature throughout the play space. Meanwhile, creativity and imagination literally take centre under a shaded structure and platform, where kids can become the star of their very own show.

What transforms a park into a destination place?

Our landscape architecture team often work with clients to establish the (the unique, distinctive atmosphere or personality of a location) to advance the design and planning of their park, garden, or public space.

Through our work, we’ve discovered that Location, Variation, and Formation are intrinsic elements to the success of any green space, forming a composite that must complement one another to achieve success.

Across urban environments, is often a crucial vehicle in fostering our relationship with nature. We know that access to gardens, parks, and other green spaces improve our overall health and wellness while encouraging environmental stewardship with the land—all elements that contribute to a high level of .

With the design of the new McEwen Gardens, an enclosed courtyard out of St. Boniface Hospital’s Psychiatry McEwen Building, we invoked a network of pathways leading to passive and recreational pockets across the landscape. These pockets feature a garden fountain, raised garden, paved half-sport court, stationary outdoor fitness equipment, various seating areas, and planting beds.

Noted by Director of Health Services Sandra Torchia, “A green space devoted to the Mental Health Program will provide our patients with a sanctuary to engage their senses and optimize recovery from conditions such as depression and anxiety by utilizing the restorative values of nature.”

DYK: Since 2011, ft3’s office has been certified as Canada CI v1.0 Gold!

We achieved this feat for its design and construction by

💦 Lowering water use by 48.75% over the LEED baseline,

🙏 Implementing dual flush water closets, waterless urinals, and low flow sensor activated lavatories,

💡Reducing lighting power density to 32% below ASHRAE 90.1-2004 baseline, (recent lighting upgrades have resulted in lighting power density 58.4% below that baseline)

🗑️ Diverting 97.8% of construction waste, inclusion of construction materials containing 33.6% overall recycled content, and 21.2% regionally manufactured materials,

🎑 Incorporating exterior views for 98% of regularly occupied spaces with 94% of these areas achieving ample daylight levels

🛋️ Applying low emitting paints and coatings, carpet systems, furniture, and seating.

Since then, sustainable principles and processes have become intrinsic to ft3’s operations and growth, inspiring us to transform our office into a dedicated to . We encourage staff to research, explore, and build their sustainability knowledge through sourcing materials, putting them into practice, and determining life cycle cost.

First Call: Birchbark biting artwork to develop into a pattern for the room’s wraparound vinyl wall covering.

Second Call: A four-segment mural of the Prairie sky, illustrating as it changes from morning to night.

Two ft3ers levelled up in 2026:

Kaitlyn Vitt became the firm’s newest Associate, while Rebecca Henderson carved out a new role at the firm: Director of Marketing.

Kaitlyn continues to hone her design expertise within the firm’s Health & Wellness sector. The desire to better understand the relationship and psychology between users and their environments drives Kaitlyn’s design ethos. She relishes the opportunity to undertake this complex and technically challenging work and design spaces where people can flourish.

Since 2022, Rebecca has helped ft3 advance and elevate its brand to current and new audiences. Her passion for creative writing alongside her strategic mind has unveiled exciting marketing opportunities for the firm, supporting coworkers’ ability to share their project work or design process in publications and panels. Rebecca looks forward to championing ft3, helping the firm achieve new heights and more wins.
