One of my favourite materials in the project. Recycled paper countertops from . A curious thing about the material is how often it reads as white!

Black is a tricky color and often lacks the visual texture and wearing characteristics that I look for. The majority of black materials and finishes show scratches and dents in rather unfortunate ways. Richlite is the same material through its thickness and seals with an oil/wax product from . That combination means it can be easily maintained and refreshed over its life.

When there are materials out there that look better at year 40 than they did at year 1, why use anything else?

My favourite challenge in design is blurring the line between indoors and out.

In cottage regions and rural locations these strategies can yield some amazing results! This stand of poplar and birch looks just as good in the winter as it does in the summer.

Our last post generated a question from about our structural eaves. Thanks for the interest!

Our success with the strategy behind the soffit and eave system underscores a scenario we often looked to leverage during the design process.

How can we limit the redundancy that traditional construction methods often see?

Can one purpose built component do the job, and do it better, than numerous pieces and layers?

A structure for the roofs edge, that would typically come by way of a fascia board, clad in flashing, and later having an eave installed with a drip edge diverting water into it, was all replaced by a single purpose built component.

This approach gave us an excuse to use a material that is 6 times thicker than the gauge of a typical eave.

Better, cheaper, faster is always our aim!
