Last weekend I tackled the last and biggest part of my garden build: planting!

I spent most of the time prepping the soil, starting with breaking up the packed clay with a sharp spade. I mixed in potting soil and compost for drainage and nutrients. đŸŒ±

All of the plants I chose are used to clay and drought conditions once established, but while they’re young they can use some help with extra amending.

I can’t wait until they’re filled in and full of flowers, pollinators and hopefully caterpillars!

More still to come 🐛

Over the last year or so I have noticed a huge surge in customers showing me ChatGPT garden designs.

They all have on thing in common: they suck.

AI gardens are almost always inaccurate and misleading, and setting you up for failure. If you don’t have a lot of gardening experience, the worst thing you can do is ask ChatGPT to make a garden for you.

It will give you plants that don’t exist, and you’ll waste your money on plants that I could have told you will not survive in that spot.

Don’t waste your time, go the extra step and ask a human for advice before AI!

It’s okay to deadhead your native perennials!đŸŒŒ

Removing spent flowers encourages bloom production since you’ve diverted the plants energy from producing seeds to producing the next round of flowers (which will then produce seeds).

Obviously this doesn’t occur in a natural landscape, and if your goal is to create an untouched native meadow, more power to you!

If seeing more flowers makes you happy and will continue to bring you into the garden, and care for it: deadhead!

I do a mix of both: I deadhead lazily throughout the summer to promote more blooms (and pollinators and butterflies), and leave seed heads through fall and winter for birds and seedling production.

If you’re a beginner overwhelmed by rules of native gardening, remember to have fun with it, it’s a learning process, it’s YOUR garden! đŸ€—

Finally warm enough to fill some planters!

I planted Gaura as the centrepiece since it will bloom all summer and attract all sorts of pollinators and hummingbirds.

Next I planted dill and parsley to feed swallowtails! I don’t plan on eating it.

I also planted squash seeds with the plan to trail them over the side of the planter and onto the ground, allowing more airflow and hopefully less mildew. We’ll see!

I made this design for those who aren’t especially geeked about native plants. Swipe through to see layout, features of the design, and the original site for this proposed garden! 🌿

Not every garden has to be a strict native meadow. That doesn’t suit most homeowners needs. Designs like these are my way of introducing native plants to those who may not have thought of them, or thought they didn’t have a place in a beautifully landscaped garden. đŸŒŒ

Happy planting! đŸȘ

Another cool spring ephemeral plant! Dutchman’s Breeches. Unfortunately these are mostly past bloom time around Windsor-Essex, but if you look closely you might be able to catch a sneaky ant carrying away its seeds!
How can you not smile thinking about how this plant was named??
