And even a major city like London is being affected.
It’s been a long winter, London. We know. You know. Your snow shovel definitely knows. And it’s still only January?!
And now, to add to the fun: the province-wide salt shortage has finally made its way to too. Yes, even though we stocked up early. Yes, even though we tried really, really hard to stay ahead of it. Winter in Ontario simply said, “Cute.”
Here's what’s happening.
Salt is taking a bit of a backseat for now. The extreme cold means it’s not very effective right now anyway, and supply is limited across Ontario.
So, here is what you can expect.
Beginning this weekend, our crews will be plowing major roads more frequently to reduce the need for salt.
We will also be using more sand in combination with salt to reduce our salt use.
Scraping to bare pavement is tricky right now, but traction is the goal—so sanding and plowing will take priority.
Our focus is first on roads with schools, hospitals, and bus routes. We will get to residential streets as soon as we can, but we may need some extra time.
Sidewalk and bus stop clearing are not impacted. We will still be clearing them as usual.
What we’re asking from you:
-Take a deep breath before you grip the steering wheel.
- If you have to travel, please be safe, be patient, stay alert, and take extra caution on the road. These conditions require everyone to work together.
- Plowing and sanding will continue to improve traction, but roads may still be slippery. Slow down, make gentle turns, and avoid sudden braking. Be mindful of others.
-Show a little winter solidarity with our crews—they’re battling the same snow and cold you are.
If you’ve recently found yourself wondering whether winter is actually just your life now, you’re not alone. London, we’re right there with you. But we’re all in this snow globe together.
