If you are like me and you see the snow start to melt you get that little bit of excitement in you knowing that spring is around the corner and with that means it is time to see changes to your yard. Soon you will hear the birds chirping, the buds blooming and your grass starting to turn from that winter stale colour to that deep dark green most of us desire.
Every spring I get asked "What are the benefits of dethatching and aeration?"
Let me first start with talking about the benefits of Dethatching your lawn. What is "Thatch"? Thatch is dead organic matter that builds up between the soil surface and grass blades. By removing this layer it allows for water, oxygen and nutrients to better absorb into the soil. It will help your lawn "spring forward" by encouraging deeper root growth and reduces the likelihood of disease and pests.
Secondly, how does aeration after dethatching help? Aeration after dethatching maximizes lawn health by removing soil plugs, allowing essential air, water, and nutrients to pe*****te deeper into the soil. It loses the soil up allowing fertilizer to reach the roots easier promoting thicker roots, which produces thicker grass. Those plugs that you see are recommended to not be raked or bagged until you see them completely mulched back into the earth. Doing both combined with a high level nitrogen fertilizer will have your lawn looking like a golf course with the appropriate amount of water.
Keep your grass cut to the highest or second highest setting which helps stop the ability for any seeds from weeds to make contact with the soil thus helping lower your limit of those pesky weeds in your lawn
