I have started working on items for a Christmas market or two. Crib boards, cuttting boards, door stops, etc. My plan is to make a large stock of my regular items and then switch to Christmas ideas. Lots of things aready started (with a ton of sanding required!)

As you can see I have purchased a large collection of live edge material, so I have lots to chose from. Also exploring some new ideas.

I made four new crib boards with a cool twist. These boards had a colored resin on the bottom third and clear resin on the top. This allows you to see down inside the knots, holes etc. It's a really cool effect. I know my pictures will not show that detail as well as I hoped.
I did explain a bit of the process in the pictures and it was a very long process.
These boards were finished with the same product I use on the cuttting and charcuterie boards, a nice coat of mineral oil and beeswax. Really gives it a smooth glass like finish.
Enjoy the pictures. FYI, my cat, Gee, is in the last one. He was in my way the whole time I was trying to take pictures and when I was finished he decided it was time to go sleep between my guitar cases.

I have been somewhat slack lately, not really doing much except cleaning up the shop. However, I did make these cutting boards as gifts for some folks. I have had some people go out of their way to help me when I was in a bind so I thought I would show them a little thanks. There is a little something different with these boards . I added Canada flags to them and the back drop was made with white resin. My poor picture taking is evident but you get the idea.

I was asked to make a crib board for someone. I thought I better give her some options. Beech and walnut really have colours and grain that pop when the finish is applied. Live edge may not be for everyone but it sure adds character.

I made another version of these fish scenes. They can sit on a flat surface or be hung on the wall. The fish are all different types of wood, the backs are all oak and the reeds are different colours to add some pop. Good fun.

I seen this idea on Facebook, so this is my version. These guys are all held up by magnets trying to meet. One magnet in the frame and one in the sea critter/ guitar. However the bottoms are all tied off with a very fine line so they stay suspended. It's a very cool illusion as any breeze makes them move and dance. It was a challange to get them tied off at the right point for sure.

A black walnut and an apple crib board completed today. The walnut always looks nice. The apple is a real unique piece of wood and made a very cool crib board. I will be curious to see if it sells

I was recently asked if I was making any money with my wood working and was there much time involved. Well my honest answer was I don't really know because for me it's just a hobby so I don't count my time or keep track of it, or the gas cost to get the material, or electrical costs, tool purchase or repair, etc. Plus all the things I buy like the feet, Canada pins, rags, sandpaper, resin etc.

I am also lucky to have a couple stores that sell my products and they also get a much deserved percentage of sales. Without venues like these stores, selling would involve much more work. So I will add a special thanks to Our Mother's Keepers and Parker's General Store.

I do think it would be a very tough market to make a living doing this and I don't think there are many crafters making much money. It's more of a labour of love and just a chance to be creative . To give you a better idea of the time involved have a look at the process to make 5 charcuterie boards.

Check this out. I bought three pieces of specialty/exotic wood, each a foot long from the wood place in Dartmouth. Total cost was darn near $40. Now,I will use them to add highlights to things I make but that cost really hurts. Especially in the lower lumbar region, lol. Sorry couldn't resist
