We are seeing a trend shift in cabinetry designs and styles this fall.
The Slim Shaker
If you still love the clean lines of a shaker door but want a more contemporary feel, the slim shaker is the perfect alternative. Also known as a skinny shaker or micro-shaker, this style features a much narrower frame around the center panel. Traditional shaker frames are typically two to three inches wide, whereas a slim shaker frame is often just an inch wide. This subtle change creates a sleeker, more refined look that bridges the gap between traditional and modern design.
Slab Cabinets
For a truly modern and uncluttered look, flat-panel or slab cabinets are rapidly gaining popularity. Unlike shaker cabinets, slab doors have no frames, bevels, or raised panels. They offer a completely smooth surface that is incredibly easy to clean and maintain.
Moody and Earthy Color Palettes
Stark, clinical white is stepping aside to make room for color. However, the current trend is not about bright, flashy hues. Instead, kitchens are being outfitted in earthy, grounded tones. Warm taupes, mushroom, and putty colors offer a soft alternative to white. For a more dramatic impact, celadon green, mysterious blue, and charcoal gray are highly sought after.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are white kitchens completely out of style? White kitchens will always have a classic appeal and are never truly obsolete. However, the trend has shifted away from cool, stark whites toward warmer, creamier whites paired with natural wood accents to prevent the space from feeling sterile.
What is the easiest cabinet style to keep clean? Slab cabinets are the easiest to clean because they have no ledges, grooves, or corners where dust and grease can accumulate. A simple wipe down with a microfiber cloth is usually all that is needed.
Is it a good idea to mix cabinet colors? Yes, two-tone kitchens remain very popular. A common and effective approach is to use a darker color or natural wood for the base cabinets and a lighter color for the upper cabinets. This helps anchor the room while keeping the upper half feeling open and airy.
