A new driveway is taking shape!

This week’s Feature Friday takes us to Ashburn, where a new driveway is going in at our Wingrove project.

Driveways take up a significant amount of visual space at the front of a property, which means they play an important role in more than just vehicle access. Material selection, layout, scale, and the way the driveway connects with the home and surrounding landscape can all influence the overall appearance of the property.

At Wingrove, the new driveway is another step toward creating a front landscape that feels intentional, functional, and connected to the home.

Water management is one of those parts of landscape design you may never notice when it's working properly.

Rainfall needs somewhere to go. Roof runoff needs to be considered. Patios and walkways need appropriate grading, and planting areas need conditions that allow water to reach the soil without consistently leaving roots saturated.

When all of these elements are considered together, water can move through a property in a much more intentional way.

October's wetter weather can make drainage patterns easier to observe. Pay attention to areas that remain saturated long after rainfall, water collecting against hardscape, or places where runoff consistently travels across the property.

Sometimes the most useful landscape observations happen when the weather isn't perfect.

One of the less visible things happening in a landscape is soil compaction.

Regular foot traffic, construction activity, heavy equipment, repeated use of the same lawn areas, and even naturally dense soils can reduce the amount of pore space available for air and water. The surface may look completely normal while conditions underneath become increasingly difficult for healthy root development.

Compaction can affect how readily water enters the soil and how easily roots can expand through it. In lawns, it may contribute to thin or struggling areas despite regular watering and care.

It’s a good reminder that what happens below the surface matters just as much as what we see above it. Healthy landscapes begin with understanding the conditions plants are actually growing in, not simply treating what appears on the surface.

There’s a difference between cleaning up a property for fall and properly preparing a landscape for the season ahead.

A thorough fall cleanup considers what should be removed, what should stay, and what different areas of the property need before winter. Garden beds may need debris removed, but some plant material can provide winter interest and habitat. Lawns need to be kept clear of heavy leaf cover, while trees and shrubs may require an entirely different approach depending on the species and condition.

Hardscape areas deserve attention too. Clearing organic material from patios, walkways, steps, and drainage areas helps keep the property functional as leaves continue to fall and wet weather becomes more frequent.
