During a recent home inspection, we had found that the contractor who finished our clients basement had neglected to install GFCI protected receptacles near a number of sinks. Having a receptacle near a sink that is not GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protected poses a significant risk of electric shock, especially in wet environments like bathrooms and kitchens. If water comes into contact with the receptacle or an appliance plugged into it, there is a risk of electric shock, which can be severe or even fatal. GFCI protection is essential in these areas to quickly interrupt the circuit if it detects a ground fault, reducing the risk of electric shock.
While this is considered a major defect due to the safety risk, it is a relatively minor fix. A qualified electrical contractor can quickly and easily replace non protected receptacles with ones that provide GFCI protection.
