Not every deck needs another coat of stain. Sometimes it needs a fresh start.

This project began with failing stain, weathered boards, algae growth, and years of exposure. We completely stripped the old finish, cleaned and brightened the wood, then custom-matched a penetrating oil stain to complement the home’s existing cedar accents and natural wood tones.

To complete the look, we also refreshed the shed entrance so the entire property felt cohesive from front to back.

The result is a finish that enhances the natural beauty of the wood while providing long-lasting protection from the inside out.

Most people would look at these ceilings and think they just needed another coat of paint.

The reality was much different.

Years of ni****ne staining had built up throughout the home, the trailer had shifted over time causing cracks to reopen, there were numerous nail pops, and several previous drywall repairs that simply hadn’t held up.

Before any finish paint was applied, every ceiling was thoroughly cleaned and degreased, all loose and failed repairs were removed, cracks were properly repaired and reinforced, nail pops were repaired, and the ceilings were sealed with a heavy coat of BIN Shellac primer to lock in the staining.

Only then was it time for the finish coats.

Quality painting isn’t just about applying paint—it’s about making sure everything underneath is right first.

Some projects don’t just transform a home.

They help bring a vision to life.

This project on Oaks Island, Georgian Bay, gave me the opportunity to be part of a remarkable cottage restoration, where every detail mattered—from exposed framing and raw wood to the finished spaces you see here.

Throughout the project we:

• Sealed and spray-finished knotty pine ceilings and exposed beams.

• Finished premium custom interior millwork throughout the cottage.

• Restored weathered cedar and exterior woodwork.

• Custom colour matched the existing charred timber cladding so the new cedar soffits and screened porch blended seamlessly with the original architecture.

• Completed extensive masking and surface preparation before every stage of spraying to ensure crisp, clean finishes throughout.

The finished photos are always the easiest to appreciate.

What they don’t show are the countless hours of preparation, coordination, and attention to detail that make a project like this possible.

Being part of a project like this was an experience I’ll always be grateful for, and watching it evolve from exposed framing to finished craftsmanship made every hour worthwhile.

Seven years of Ontario weather, countless summer barbecues, and years of everyday use had left this pressure-treated deck looking tired and dry.

Instead of covering the wood up, the goal was to restore it properly and protect it for years to come.

Every deck begins with preparation.

This project was cleaned using Activox, a hydrogen peroxide wood cleaner that removes dirt, mildew and weathering without the harsh effects of chlorine bleach or aggressive caustic cleaners. After a thorough pressure wash, every surface was sanded to remove raised wood fibres and create the ideal surface for stain pe*******on.

Preparation determines the finish.

For protection, we chose Cutek Extreme in Espresso.

Unlike film-forming coatings that sit on top of the wood and eventually peel, Cutek penetrates deep into the timber, allowing it to breathe while helping repel water and protect against UV damage. That means easier maintenance in the future, longer service life, and a finish that continues to highlight the natural character of the wood instead of hiding it.

When quality preparation is paired with premium products, the results speak for themselves.

This family now has an outdoor space that’s ready for many more summers while giving the wood the protection it deserves against the Canadian climate.

Another wonderful Waubaushene family trusted Pine St. Painting to bring this custom MDF wainscoting to life.

A beautiful finish isn’t created by the final coat, it’s earned through every step that comes before it.

Although this MDF arrived pre-primed, it still received a full coat of Sherwin-Williams Premium Wall & Wood Primer before being finished with Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel.

Could it have been painted straight from the factory primer? Absolutely.

Would it have produced the same level of finish, adhesion, and long-term durability? In my opinion, no.

That’s the difference between simply getting paint onto a surface and building a finish that’s designed to look exceptional for years to come.

Not every painting project starts with paint.

This home had several drywall and settlement-related issues throughout the main living areas, stairwell, and bathroom that needed to be properly repaired before any finish work could begin.

Cracks were reinforced, damaged areas rebuilt, repaired surfaces skimmed and sanded, then blended back into the surrounding walls for a seamless finish.

To maintain the home’s original appearance, the existing colours were professionally matched using Sherwin-Williams colour scanning technology, allowing the repairs to disappear into the existing colour scheme without requiring a full repaint of every surface.

Once repairs were completed, the affected areas were finished using Sherwin-Williams Emerald Matte on the walls and Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel on the trim to restore a clean, durable finish throughout the home.

The goal isn’t to make the repair look good.

The goal is to make it look like it was never there.

Just like a family enjoying a peaceful day at Victoria Harbour, everything should feel natural, seamless, and undisturbed.

Some projects aren’t about changing a space. They’re about getting it back.

This basement in Waubaushene had seen years of wear, damaged drywall, failed repairs, cracked corners, paint drips, and surface imperfections that needed to be properly addressed before any painting could begin.

Over the course of the project, damaged drywall was repaired, failing areas were rebuilt, cracks were reinforced, surfaces were sanded smooth, and the entire basement was professionally repainted to restore a clean, cohesive finish throughout the space.

One of the most important parts of this project wasn’t the paint itself, it was the preparation that came before it.

When repairs are completed properly, they disappear.

That’s the goal.

The result is a bright, refreshed space that feels like part of the home again.

The best painting projects are the ones where nobody notices the work that went into them.

This recent project in Midland involved far more than applying paint.

Before any finish coats were applied, ceilings required extensive repairs, wood surfaces needed careful restoration, and a large natural stone fireplace required the proper preparation to ensure its future finish performs exactly as it should.

Throughout the home, Benjamin Moore Aura in Oxford White was painted onto several walls, including the existing Black Is Black feature wall, creating a fresh, cohesive look throughout the space.

Downstairs, significant repair and preparation work was completed in the board room before finishing it with Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series. The goal was to preserve the character of the space while improving its durability, washability, and overall appearance for years to come.

The products matter.

The preparation matters more.

Exceptional finishes are built long before the final coat goes on.
