With upgraded insulation, high-performance glazing and improved mechanical systems, Queenswood Daycare demonstrates how adaptive reuse can preserve the past while creating spaces that serve the community today.

Outside, two forest-integrated play areas extend the daycare into its natural surroundings. Inside, a long-vacant space is once again full of life.

37 new childcare spaces. One revitalized building. A whole new chapter.

Originally designed by celebrated Victoria architect John di Castri, the former Queenswood Retreat Centre chapel has been thoughtfully transformed into a vibrant daycare for UVic’s youngest learners.

Rather than starting from scratch, we worked with the existing building—preserving its vaulted roof, exposed concrete block walls, clerestory skylights, wood windows and vintage light fixtures, while introducing a carefully considered 70 m² addition.

The result is a place where the character of the original chapel meets the energy of a new generation.

The renovation balanced the character of an existing historic building with a fresh, contemporary storefront designed to better connect with the street and the surrounding neighbourhood.

Finished with new hemlock siding, lighting, a playful mural and a bas-relief wood screen, the renewed corner has become a lively part of Cook Street Village once again.

New life for an old favourite — and a corner that feels more welcoming than ever.

Some buildings have a little more history than others.

The Cook Street began with the renovation of the historic Oxford Foods building — an eclectic collection of four structures that had evolved over more than a century.

Our approach was to embrace that history while giving the building a fresh connection to the neighbourhood. New operable windows at the corner open the produce floor to the street, bringing daylight, views and a little more of the market experience outdoors.

A little old, a little new, and plenty of character.

Inspired by the character of Sea Cider’s original farmhouse, the new event pavilion was designed to feel like it has always belonged among the orchard.

The familiar pitched roof, simple gabled form, and generous openings echo the architecture of the existing building, while a more contemporary material palette and detailing give the new pavilion its own identity.

Rather than replicate what came before, the design takes cues from the original and reinterprets them for a new purpose — creating a natural connection between the old and the new.

For 's event pavilion on the Saanich Peninsula, the goal was to create a year-round gathering space that felt at home among the orchards and forest.

A soft, minimal interior lets the landscape take centre stage, while exposed wood framing nods to the working character of the existing cidery. Skylights bring in changing daylight from above, and a large folding window opens the room toward the orchard, Haro Strait, and Mt. Baker beyond.

Warm, simple, and quietly connected to place—a countryside classic with a subtle sense of newness.

A closer look at Plexxis.

The Office Building was designed to create a strong presence along the Westhills commercial corridor while remaining responsive to the scale of its surroundings.

A layered composition of glass, cementitious panels, steel, and aluminum gives the building a clean, contemporary character, while the expressive roofline and generous overhangs add depth and shelter at the pedestrian level.

The upper floor steps back from the street, reducing the perceived scale of the six-storey building and creating space for a generous rooftop terrace above.

From the portfolio: a workplace designed with people in mind.

Completed in 2024, The Office Building in Westhills brings together clean contemporary architecture, sustainable building strategies, and a thoughtful approach to employee well-being.

Across 80,000+ sq. ft., the six-storey workplace incorporates flexible offices, generous natural light, a rooftop terrace, wellness and recreation spaces, and a range of amenities designed to support connection, productivity, and time away from the desk.

Outside, rain gardens, bike amenities, EV-ready infrastructure, and a high-performance building envelope reinforce the project’s focus on long-term sustainability.

A workplace that’s designed not just for how we work, but for how we want to feel while we’re there.

Cascadia is excited to welcome Paige back to the office, but now as an Intern Architect. Paige spent three summers at the firm during her undergraduate schooling, and now that she has finished architecture school, we are thrilled to welcome her back in a new role.

Paige grew up in Manitoba and completed high school in Victoria, before studying architecture in both Toronto and Brussels, Belgium. Moving between such different places has shaped her both as a person and a designer, and travel remains a lasting source of inspiration.

That exposure to so many different ways of living and building has given Paige an appreciation for the quirky and atypical. In Belgium, her thesis work centered on decay. A study on the way buildings weather, crack, and wear over time, and how that slow unraveling can hold as much meaning as anything freshly built.

Outside of the office, you can find Paige out on the water kayaking, working through a new problem at the climbing gym, or at the pottery wheel, shaping something with her hands after a day spent shaping things on screen. Welcome, Paige!
