ASBESTOS WAS USED IN WHAT?! 😳

Cigarette filters. Christmas snow. Hair dryers.

And now for a little unexpected history….with a serious reminder behind it.

Asbestos was once prized for its heat resistance and versatility. Its uses went far beyond insulation and building materials…

🚬 CIGARETTE FILTERS
From 1952 until at least mid-1956, the original Kent “Micronite” cigarette filters contained crocidolite—also known as blue asbestos. Marketed as offering extra protection, the filters could actually release asbestos fibres into the smoke.

🎄 CHRISTMAS “SNOW”
Asbestos flakes were sold for decorating Christmas trees and holiday displays. Their resistance to fire was a selling point. That snowy finishing touch could contain a hazardous mineral.

🎬 HOLLYWOOD MOVIE SETS
Historical accounts identify asbestos snow in Citizen Kane (1941). It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) developed foam-based falling snow, but contemporary reporting also recorded asbestos in its set dressing.

And that famous Wizard of Oz snow story? It’s disputed—a makeup artist recalled crushed gypsum instead.

💨 HAIR DRYERS
Some older hair dryers contained asbestos insulation near their heating components. In 1979, U.S. safety investigations addressed the potential for dryers to blow asbestos fibres into the air. Repair and replacement programmes followed.

🔥 FAKE FIREPLACE EMBERS
Some decorative ashes and embers used in gas fireplaces contained asbestos to create a realistic glow. Banned in 1977.

🎭 VINTAGE GAS MASKS
Some older gas-mask filters contained asbestos. Equipment intended to protect the wearer could itself become a source of exposure.

(These are specific historical examples…not a claim that every product in these categories contained asbestos.)

The lesson? An everyday appearance doesn’t tell you what something is made of.

Before disturbing suspect older materials, have them professionally assessed. Leave questionable vintage items intact and seek advice.

What are we looking at here? 👀

A building wrapped from top to bottom — and no, it’s not getting ready for Christmas. 😂

Before demolition can begin, there’s a whole other job that has to happen first.

This building is being fully contained so designated materials can be safely removed and the work area kept controlled throughout the process.

Our scope here includes removing interior drywall and flooring, along with select floor-levelling compounds and mastics, plus exterior materials including stucco, caulking, window putties, roofing materials and ducting.

It’s a big project, but this is exactly what proper demolition preparation looks like: contain it, remove it safely, then move forward.

Swipe through for a closer look at what’s happening behind the wrap. 👀

Happy Thanksgiving!

09/30/2026

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

A day to honour Survivors, the children who never returned home, and the families and communities affected by residential schools.

It’s also a time to listen, learn, and reflect on this history and its ongoing impacts.

RemovAll will be closed on September 30.

Every Child Matters.

What are we looking at here? 👀

A massive housing complex that’s ultimately coming down.

But before demolition can happen, there’s a whole lot of work that has to happen first — and that’s where we come in.

At our Blanshard project, our scope includes removing:

• Interior drywall throughout
• Flooring
• Stucco
• Ducting
• Roofing materials
• Caulking
• Select floor-levelling compounds and mastics
• Window putties

It’s a big site, a big scope, and there are a lot of layers to work through before demolition can even begin.

We’ll be sharing more from this project as it progresses — because sometimes the most interesting part of demolition is everything that has to happen before anything comes down. 👀

🚧 Exterior asbestos removal is underway. 🏡

This project involves selective stucco removal to safely expose and access the areas requiring abatement while keeping the rest of the building protected.

One section is already fully contained and ready to go, while another will be carefully removed as part of the ongoing abatement process.

Asbestos work isn’t about smashing things apart—it’s about planning, containment, precision, and protecting everyone on site. Every step is done with safety at the forefront so the project can move forward with confidence.

That’s what we do best. 👊🏼
