1 Eco-Friendly Plumbing Upgrade for Your Home

Upgrading your plumbing system to be more eco-friendly not only benefits the earth, but also your bank account! As sustainability continues to be a great concern, one of the first things you can do is make simple and green renovations to your home.

Water-Saving Toilets
One of the most effective ways to reduce household water consumption is by upgrading to a water-saving toilet. Almost 30 percent of household water consumption comes from toilet use. Replacing an old toilet with a newer, low-flow model will not only reduce water consumption, but also lower your future water and energy bills! Thanks to technological advancements, water-saving toilets won’t lose any functionality as they have greatly improved from when they first were rolled out. There are many choices for installing a water-saving toilet such as gravity-assisted or dual-flush. No matter which one you decide is best for your home, these options will greatly reduce the amount of water passed through your plumbing system and can save thousands of gallons of water per year.

Here Are Some of the Reasons Our Customers Call for Drain Repair Service

Clogs: If a drain is slow or stopped, it may be due to clogs from food scraps, soap scum, hair, or fats and oils that solidify as they move down the drain.
Leaks: Water leaks may begin to form underneath your drain, indicating either a link from the sink basin or a more serious problem in your plumbing system. A plumber is qualified to locate and repair the exact source of the leak.
Age: Drains may also form problems due to old age, including corrosion and rust. In this case, you may have pipes that need replacement.
Hard Water: If you have “hard water,” it means that an excess of magnesium and calcium affect your water, causing mineral buildups to form along the insides of pipes. Hard water is a common problem that can be solved by installing a water softener.
Noises: Noises from your drain such as a gurgling may indicate that the pressure levels in your pipes are not balanced.
Odours: Finally, many homeowners call for repair when foul odours emit from the drain. This may simply indicate a problem with the P-trap underneath the drain, or it may indicate a problem with the home’s sewer line.

How Winter Affects Your Plumbing — and What You Can Do About It

1. FROZEN PIPES : When the mercury dips below freezing, poorly insulated or exposed pipes in basements, garages, and crawl spaces are especially vulnerable to freezing. That means they’re in danger of bursting, and trust us, you want to avoid that mess at all costs.

Left unaddressed, a burst pipe can cause costly water damage to your property — we’re talking thousands of dollars in repairs — and create a breeding ground for mold and mildew.

2. CLOGGED DRAINS
You know better than to wash oil and grease down your drains, but we understand that sometimes, stuff happens. Pipes collect debris, whether it’s hair, soap scum, or sludgy cooking substances that build up over time. When cold weather hits, anything stuck in pipes can stiffen, solidify, or combine with frozen water to leave you with a fully stopped-up sink or shower.

When you encounter winter clogs, try pouring boiling water down the drain in question in order to thaw the obstruction. Or, pick up the phone. Let a pro take a closer look at what’s causing your clogs and provide a permanent solution, not just a quick fix.

3. WATER HEATER WOES
Your water heater works extremely hard throughout the year, but in the winter, it goes into overdrive to meet the increased demand for hot showers, heavy loads of laundry and dishes. That additional wear and tear can lead to a water heater breakdown, especially if you’ve skipped seasonal maintenance over the past year or longer.

Lukewarm or chilly water, when you want it piping hot, doesn’t just make for a dissatisfying shower experience. It could be a sign of an overworked or failing water heater. If you notice inconsistent water temperatures, hear strange sounds coming from the water heater, or observe signs of leakage around the base of the appliance, act fast. A busted water heater, like a burst pipe, is a mess no homeowner wants to deal with — no matter the season.

The Effects of Grease and Oil on Plumbing

The plumbing system in your home, including your kitchen, is really only designed to handle liquid waste running through it. There are a couple of exceptions, like your toilet or the garbage disposal. However, the garbage disposal isn’t really suited to handle grease and oil any better than a regular kitchen drain. The problem is that the garbage disposal is supposed to render solid waste into small enough pieces that they can be washed down to the sewer. When oil and grease are poured down the disposal, however, they are already viscous liquids. This allows them to stick to the blades of the garbage disposal, as well as the walls of the drain pipe. Then, they harden into a type of muck that can gum up the disposal and clog the drains. This is why you should install a grease trap.

4 TIPS TO STOP TREE ROOTS FROM PENETRATING YOUR SEWER OR MAIN LINE

For homes with trees either on or surrounding the property, tree root infestation on plumbing lines is a common and stressful problem. Tree roots have the tendency to pe*****te plumbing lines, especially in older plumbing systems, causing significant and costly repairs.

Mechanical Auger: Cracks in your sewer or main line are common occurrences, and typically are fine as long as tree roots do not grow out of control and collapse the pipe. Often times, tree roots will enter the cracks and begin to grow. Clearing your sewer and main line with a mechanical auger at the first sign of tree roots is effective in protecting the integrity of the sewer line. This is not a solution, however it is a relatively inexpensive way to prevent substantial damage to your sewer or main line. Regular mechanical auger cleanings may be necessary to prevent substantial damage to your home’s plumbing system.
Chemical Removal: Another effective method in addressing sewer line root intrusion is using copper sulfate crystals to kill off tree roots before they can grow and expa
Hydro Jetter: This method of clearing tree roots tends to cost a bit more than the first two options, however is extremely effectively and is usually followed by a chemical treatment. A hydro jetter is a machine that uses high pressured water to eliminate tree roots and other debris to clear pipes.
Manually removing tree roots: When you have troublesome tree roots, sometimes digging them up is the only way to effectively resolve the problem. Especially when clearing the roots can actually cause the pipes to collapse as they have grown so large they are essentially a part of the plumbing. This method is expensive and time consuming, however is guaranteed to resolve your problem once and for all.
