On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we join others from coast to coast in reflecting on Canada’s history and the intergenerational impact of residential schools on Indigenous peoples. Today, we honour the memories of those lost, recognize the resilience of survivors, and celebrate the enduring spirit and vibrant cultures of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples.

Today, September 30, our operations will be closed for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It’s a day set aside to reflect on our history and learn about its lasting impact on Indigenous communities.

One part of reconciliation is understanding. In that spirit, we’d like to share the meaning behind the artwork shown in our post.

The eagle represents First Nations, the narwhal the Inuit, and the beaded flower the Métis. The circle represents together in the spirit of reconciliation, while the pathway represents the road that we are all on. The orange represents truth telling and healing, which we at LSM aim to fully hear and support. And the stars? They represent the children who never made it home from residential schools, which we can only offer our deepest sympathies and regrets for actions done not so long ago. Lastly, the orange smoke represents Indigenous traditions, spirituality, inclusion and diversity, which we hope to learn and embrace.

may be one day, but our intentions to learn and unlearn extend well beyond.
