Until 2025, a left onto Keating from Highway 17 northbound crossed oncoming traffic, which is why
the job existed. But what did this build actually take?

Year one was live utilities. Then the flyover opened while the southbound ramp sat closed, looking
finished, because asphalt plants on this island shut down for winter, so Tanner Road kept the detour
until that ramp existed.

That is what the left took.

You can tell a lot about a job by reading its fence. Who the GC is, which trades are on it, sometimes who's hiring. It's the one place on a build where every name sits at eye level for the whole run of the job, and everyone walks past it.

This week our name went on one. First of the new boards, Blue Anvil and TLC Victoria on the same sign.

Both companies, one number. TLC covers the role, every day, as flexible as your schedule needs. Blue Anvil gives you the same tradesperson on your site for as long as the work runs. Different promises, same call.

A few more going up over the next few weeks.

More people are trying to get into the trades right now than at any point on record. Over 101,000 people registered as apprentices across Canada in 2024, the highest number since 2008.

On the Island there's already a line for a training seat, and BC added new spots this year to shorten it. None of that is the hard part. Finding an employer, one of us, willing to sponsor someone through the jobsite years after is, and that side didn't get any bigger this year.

2,614 Island employers are doing exactly that right now, for 8,465 apprentices. Sponsors are the real shortage.

A $43 bill rate against a $35 wage looks like an $8 markup. Example numbers, not a price list. Do the WCB, CPP, EI, and vacation-pay math on that $35 wage and it stops looking that way.

WorkSafeBC assessment, the employer's CPP and EI match, and statutory vacation pay add roughly $5.28 to $5.98 an hour onto that wage before payroll admin time even gets counted. That puts the real loaded cost of a $35/hr direct hire at $40.30 to $41 an hour, a 15 to 17% gap that has nothing to do with who is writing the invoice.

A chunk of the leasing "premium" everyone is negotiating against is the same money hiding inside direct-hire payroll the whole time.

Barclay joined BCCA and members of the BC NDP Caucus for an open exchange about the strengths that make BC’s construction industry so critical to our province, and the challenges that can create barriers to infrastructure development when left unaddressed.

Good conversations to be part of. More work ahead.

Blue Anvil is sponsoring Happy Hour at the YBN Charity Casino this Friday. 🥂

We spend our days building Vancouver Island. But this Friday night, we’re helping build a dream for a local family.

Every ticket and every chip supports Help Fill A Dream.

Proud to share the room with companies that know this industry is about more than just the work. It's about the people.

A quick April Fools Day clarification from Blue Anvil.

We are not a general errand service. We do not deliver groceries, help with moves, or send someone to water your plants while you are out of town.

That is our sister company TLC Victoria. They are fast, flexible, and genuinely good at last-minute. Love them for it.

We are the other side of the family. The full-time employment side. Every tradesperson and apprentice placed through Blue Anvil is a Blue Anvil employee, with benefits, career support, and a real stake in performing. Someone who shows up because this is their career.

If that is what your project needs, we should talk.

Happy April 1st from the Blue Anvil crew.
