Fast-Stat provided us with an easy solution this week on a job where the customer wanted to upgrade to a Wifi thermostat. Only problem was their 15 year old heating set up only had two conductor thermostat wire ran from the furnace. Most Wifi stats require a constant 24V power source that old style, 2 conductor, low voltage wiring fails to provide.

Instead of costly demo work to the walls and ceilings and extensive labour pulling new larger thermostat wire through the house, FAST-STAT uses the existing 2 wires as a 24V power source and then adds other wires from to control the individual functions of the system.

These can be paired with most conventional systems and most thermostats and there are multiple models available depending on what you are trying to control.

Another rough in begins…

A few challenges to work out at this custom home for Keith Construction Ltd including a 3 zone duct system, additional zones in floor radiant heating, mechanical room under a suspended garage, open truss floor joists and unforgiving framing with limited pathways and minimal drops requested by the client. Sounds like a perfect job for the experts at Groundswell Mechanical.

Thanks to our guys for their dedication and attention to the details and also to Tom Saliken for his leadership on site.

Pot fillers are a popular item these days in custom home construction and kitchen renovations. While customer opinion is often divided on whether these are practical fixtures or an unnecessary luxury, we follow some simple rules when installing them to ensure our customers’ satisfaction.

Groundswell Mechanical’s 3 Rules For Pot Fillers:

1. Place the fillers high enough above the cooktop surface to allow for large pots underneath. We recommend a minimum of 18” but also need to consider the height of the hood fan and not go too high when laying out.

2. Never center the water supply outlet on the filler with the center of the cooktop. The water outlets are always offset to one side, so centering them on the cooktop will make the entire fixture look off visually when it is folded back against the wall in its resting position. Instead, center the folded fixture with the cooktop and rough in your water supply accordingly.

3. Always loop the pot filler water line feed from the nearby kitchen sink cabinet and provide a labelled shut off for easy access during servicing or emergencies.
