Monday tip: give your furnace a test run before the first hard cold night.

Bump the thermostat up a few degrees and let it run for 15–20 minutes while it's still mild out. Way better to find a problem now than at 2 a.m. in a cold snap. A few things to check:

• Warm air coming out of the vents within a few minutes
• Thermostat responding (fresh batteries if it has them)
• Filter not caked with dust — swap it if it's grey
• No banging, squealing, or rattling once it's running
• A little dusty smell the first time is normal; a strong burning or gas smell is not — shut it off and call
