🏗️ 30 Years Strong | Then & Now #10

In 1996, a hydrovac job was one truck and one hole, and a lot of phone calls to line up everything around it. In 2026, the whole job moves together.

This month's Then & Now looks at how the work got leaner:

• Then: a unit from the yard, wherever the yard was; material hauled to wherever would take it; restoration booked with somebody else, whenever they could come
• Now: more than 200 units dispatched from six Ontario locations; hydro excavation, restoration, traffic control, soil recycling, and project coordination handled end to end by one team, on one schedule; material recycled through an ECA-approved facility in the central Greater Toronto Area; NextGen units roughly ten decibels quieter than conventional ones
• Always: commitment and continuous improvement — asking, on every job, what the Customer is paying for that isn't work

The job got leaner. The reason behind it never changed.

📧 Crunch Time | One Team, Start to Finish

October is one of the busiest stretches of the year in this industry. Year-end deadlines are close, year-end budgets have to be used, and the restoration window closes with the weather.

When the deadline is close, it matters who is standing behind the work. What OE brings to the last quarter:

• A fleet of over 200 units, dispatched from six Ontario locations — the unit comes from the nearest yard
• The whole job under one team, end to end — hydro excavation, restoration, traffic control, soil recycling, and project coordination, all handled by OE, with no subcontractors for the Customer to line up
• One schedule — the excavation finishes and the restoration starts, because the same dispatcher booked both

🍁 Happy Thanksgiving | Gratitude for 30 Years of Partnership

Thirty years is a long time to be trusted with the ground under someone's street.

This Thanksgiving, OE would like to say thank you:

• To the Customers who have kept calling, project after project, for thirty years — that trust is not taken for granted
• To the partners, municipalities, and communities OE works alongside in Ontario — the work only happens with you
• To every OE employee — operators, drivers, labourers, mechanics, dispatchers, supervisors, and the people in the office — whose work earned that trust

🚛 Fleet & Service Spotlight | Gear that Gets It Done

Exposing a buried utility under a paved road takes more than one piece of equipment. A coring machine or road saw opens the pavement, the hydrovac clears the soil underneath, and when the work is done the hole has to be filled and the surface put back. On an OE job, all of it comes from the same team.

What OE provides with end-to-end hydrovac and utility support services:

• The right unit for the site — NextGen units are still working trucks, but roughly ten decibels quieter than conventional ones, and that's noticed on early starts in residential neighbourhoods
• The support equipment behind the hole — dump trucks, stone slingers, U-Fill, coring, and restoration units — booked by the same dispatcher, on the same schedule
• Traffic control planned into the scope, so the public is safe around the work
• Soil recycling through an ECA-approved facility so the material is handled as part of the job
• More than seventy trucks dispatched from six Ontario locations, so the unit comes from the nearest yard

What that means for a Customer: the excavation finishes and the restoration starts, instead of waiting a week for another contractor's truck. No subcontractors to line up, no gaps to manage, and one team accountable from start to finish.

🦺 Safety Snapshot | Field Tip of the Week

The days are getting shorter in October. Crews are starting in the dark and finishing in it, and wet leaves are starting to cover the ground.

This week's field tip: make sure you can be seen.

• Light the site before the work starts — set up lighting for the start and end of the day, not just when it gets dark
• Keep high-visibility gear on the outside — a hi-vis vest under a jacket is not high visibility
• Treat wet leaves like ice — on the road, on the ramps, and at the edge of the excavation
• Back up slowly, and only with a spotter — in the dark and the rain, nobody else can see you

Shorter days don't change the standard. Stay safe out there, and look out for each other.

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today, September 30, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

It is a day to remember the children who never returned home from residential schools, and to recognize the survivors, their families, and their communities — along with the responsibility that remembering carries.

OE Utility Services works on ground across Ontario with a history that did not begin thirty years ago. Today we encourage our team, our Customers, and our partners to take the time to listen, to learn, and to reflect.

A beautiful day on the course at TCA, Toronto Construction Association's Women's Golf Day 2026 💚

🦺 Safety Snapshot | Field Tip of the Week

A locate tells you what has been marked. It does not always tell you what is there.

Records are imperfect, services get moved, and what is in the ground does not always match what is on the print. This week’s field tip: treat every locate as information to be confirmed.

• Read the locate and the prints together before any excavation begins
• Expose and confirm — hydro excavation exists so a line can be seen rather than assumed
• Watch for what isn’t marked — abandoned services, private lines, and old work rarely appear on any record
• Stop and re-verify the moment something doesn’t match — those five minutes are the cheapest five minutes on the job

Thirty years of Ontario ground has taught us the same lesson over and over: the surprises are the ones nobody marked. Stay safe out there.

♻️ Fleet & Service Spotlight | What Comes Out of the Ground

Every excavation produces material that has to go somewhere. On a lot of projects that is the part nobody planned for — and it turns into a cost, a delay, and a liability at the end of the job.

OE handles it as part of the work, not as an afterthought:

• An ECA-approved soil recycling facility in the central Greater Toronto Area — material handled responsibly, not left as an open question
• Recycling ahead of landfill wherever the material allows — a better environmental outcome, and often a better cost outcome
