This month we are highlighting Production & Planning Coordinator Nitha Thevarajah, a key member of our Progress Shop team, whose role has evolved alongside his growing understanding of structural steel fabrication.
Since joining Steelcon, Nitha has progressed from supporting a single shift to coordinating production across three, while continuing to prepare documentation that keeps the shop running efficiently. His engineering background and hands-on experience give him a unique perspective on planning, production, and teamwork.
Here's what he had to say about his Steelcon journey:
What attracted you to Steelcon, and how has your role evolved since you joined?
What initially attracted me to Steelcon was its extensive resources, experienced workforce, and ability to deliver complete fabrication and installation solutions on demanding schedules. Since joining, my role has evolved significantly. I started by preparing cut lists and CNC files to support a single production shift. Over time, my responsibilities expanded, and today I coordinate production schedules across three shifts while continuing to manage the documentation and planning processes that keep operations running smoothly.
Can you share a moment or decision that significantly influenced your career path?
With a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, a post-graduate certificate in Structural Steel Management and Detailing, and experience in road construction, I came to Steelcon with a strong planning background but limited exposure to fabrication operations. Working directly in a fabrication plant gave me a completely different perspective on the industry, connecting academic concepts with the realities of production, scheduling, and ex*****on.
What do you enjoy most about your current role? Is there a project you're especially proud of?
I enjoy the variety of working on different projects and finding ways to keep production moving efficiently. I'm especially proud of the Choice Caledon Business Park project, completed in late 2024, which had roughly 60 truckloads of steel fabricated, painted, and shipped within about a month. I was fairly new in my role at the time, so coordinating everything on such a tight schedule was a valuable learning experience.
What skills have been most valuable in your role?
Adaptability, planning, and problem-solving have been the most valuable skills in my role. Conditions can change quickly when equipment, manpower, or other resources become unavailable, so being able to adjust schedules and move work forward helps minimize downtime and keep projects on track. Finding solutions in real time is key, but none of it happens alone. Success in construction is a team effort, and I'm grateful for the support of everyone at Steelcon who has contributed to that success along the way.
