Steel is going up on The Village of Heritage Trails, a new long-term care development in Oakville, Ontario, as Steelcon continues erecting steel across both towers.

The 466,000 sq. ft. development consists of two connected 10-storey long-term care homes, each accommodating 320 beds for a total of 640 long-term care spaces. The two homes will be joined by Schlegel Villages' signature Main Street, which will include resident living areas and amenity spaces.

Steelcon's scope includes structural steel, steel decking, joists, canopy framing, and Peikko delta beams, a composite slim-floor system that sits within the floor depth for flatter ceilings and a lower overall building height. Delta beams were a new addition to our typical scope, and our team embraced the opportunity to learn the system and integrate it with our steel.

With two tower cranes working side by side and close coordination with the concrete trades, steel continues to move efficiently and safely on site.

Once complete, The Village of Heritage Trails will provide additional long-term care capacity for seniors in the Oakville community.

Structural Steel Availability Series: The Inventory Nobody Carries Anymore

Why can't service centres simply pull additional steel from inventory?

The answer is more complicated than many people realize.

Over the past several years, steel price volatility has encouraged many organizations throughout the supply chain to carry lower inventory levels.

Holding large inventories can create significant financial risk when material values fluctuate.

As a result, the industry has increasingly shifted toward project-specific procurement and just-in-time supply strategies.

While this approach can reduce risk, it also reduces the inventory buffer that once helped absorb sudden increases in demand or supply disruptions.

When a particular section becomes difficult to source, there is often less inventory available to bridge the gap.

This has made forecasting, planning, and procurement timing more important than ever.

Structural Steel Availability Series: You May Be Able to Get Steel. Just Not That Section.

One of the biggest misconceptions about structural steel procurement is that mills produce every section continuously.

They don't.

Mill production is typically scheduled in rolling campaigns based on market demand, production efficiency, and available capacity.

As a result, availability can vary significantly from one section to another.

A project may be able to obtain steel relatively easily, while a specific wide fl**ge section required for the design may face extended lead times or limited availability.

This is why availability challenges are often section-specific rather than industry-wide.

The issue isn't always steel production. Sometimes it's simply obtaining the exact section specified.

Understanding this distinction is becoming increasingly important for project teams looking to manage procurement risk.

This month, we’re highlighting Chris Moss, a Field Operations Manager whose construction background and hands-on experience help him navigate the challenges of complex projects and support teams across the country.

Since joining Steelcon, Chris has taken on an increasingly broad role, helping manage multiple projects and crews while working closely with clients and project teams. His ability to understand both the larger project objectives and the details being managed in the field allows him to help teams plan effectively and keep projects moving forward.

Here’s what he had to say about his Steelcon journey:

What attracted you to Steelcon, and how has your role evolved since you joined?

"What initially attracted me to Steelcon was the opportunity to work with a tight-knit, fast-paced group of individuals who are all committed to executing projects at the highest level. Since joining the company, my role has evolved into helping manage multiple projects and crews across the country. It’s given me the opportunity to work with a wide range of teams and take on new challenges while continuing to grow within field operations."

Can you share a moment or decision that significantly influenced your career path?

"I come from a construction background, and many of the people in my support system have also built their careers in the industry, so construction was a natural fit for me. Being exposed to the industry from an early stage gave me an appreciation for the teamwork and problem-solving that goes into successfully completing a project. As I’ve progressed in my career, those experiences have continued to shape how I approach challenges and work with the teams around me."

What do you enjoy most about your current role? Is there a project here that you’re especially proud of?

"One of the things I enjoy most about my role is engaging with clients and helping them understand what is needed to successfully plan and execute a project, both before and after steel installation. I’m especially proud of our work on the BMO Field expansion in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as well as two data centre projects we’ve completed. These high-paced and demanding projects highlighted the strength of the entire Steelcon team and the importance of collaboration across every department."

What skills have been most valuable in your role?

"Having a strong understanding of construction as a whole has been one of the most valuable skills in my role. It allows me to understand the bigger picture when navigating challenging projects, while also recognizing the smaller details our teams are dealing with on the ground. Understanding both sides helps us anticipate challenges, address issues early, and minimize disruptions on site."

Structural Steel Availability Series: Why Demand Matters

A data center in Texas can influence a project in Toronto.

A manufacturing facility in Ohio can affect steel availability in Alberta.

Structural steel markets across North America are more interconnected than many people realize.

Large infrastructure projects, industrial developments, manufacturing facilities, energy projects, and data centers all compete for mill capacity and structural steel production.

When demand increases significantly in one region, the effects are often felt throughout the supply chain.

Even when global steel production remains strong, certain products can become more difficult to procure as mills allocate capacity to meet demand.

The result isn't necessarily a shortage of steel.

It's a shortage of specific steel products available within the required project timeline.

Structural Steel Availability Series: Why Steel Availability Isn't the Same Everywhere

Most people assume structural steel availability is relatively consistent across North America.

It isn't.

Different regions rely on different supply chains, manufacturing capabilities, transportation networks, and import sources.

For example, Canada does not currently produce hot-rolled wide fl**ge sections domestically, making imported material a critical part of the supply chain. Other regions may have local rolling capacity but face different challenges related to demand, transportation, or mill allocation.

This means the availability of a structural section can depend as much on geography as it does on market conditions.

The reality is that structural steel procurement is rarely a simple matter of placing an order. Material origin, transportation routes, inventory levels, and mill schedules all influence what can be delivered and when.

Understanding where steel comes from is the first step toward understanding why availability challenges occur.

Structural Steel Availability Series: The Industry Doesn't Have a Steel Shortage

The construction industry doesn't have a steel shortage.

It has an availability problem.

The challenge isn't whether steel exists globally. The challenge is obtaining the required section, from an acceptable source, within the required timeframe, and at a commercially viable cost.

In recent years, global economic uncertainty, shifting trade relationships, transportation challenges, and changing procurement strategies have created increasing pressure throughout the structural steel supply chain.

As a result, owners, builders, and engineers are encountering longer lead times, reduced availability of certain sections, and greater uncertainty during procurement.

Understanding these challenges is becoming increasingly important because material availability is now influencing project schedules, costs, and even design decisions.
