If you haven't already, here are some things you may want to do while we still have warmer weather....

* Put your snow tires on your vehicle(s)

* Get your wheel nuts torqued 100Km after the tire switch

* Get a suspension alignment

* Repair/replace automobile glass that chipped or cracked over the summer

* Store a new bottle of windshield wiper fluid and a snow brush in your trunk. Top up your windshield wiper fluid tank.

* Mow your lawn one last time and winterize your mower.

* Get your snowblower/shovels out of storage and place them in a standby location

* Close your exterior water taps and pack away your hoses, sprinklers etc

* Rake excess leaves and pick up debris around your property, especially in your window wells and eavestroughs

* Cover or put away patio furniture

* Caulk any deteriorated exterior silicone around windows and doors

* Walk around your exterior and garage interior walls adjacent to your home's interior and seal any openings, no matter how tiny, to prevent rodents from entering your home as temperatures drop.

* Glue down any loose patio pavers on steps and walkways

* Cut away dead branches and plants, bushes etc and wrap/cage plants and young trees that are vulnerable to winter winds and hungry rabbits and mice.

* Fill your bike tires and lubricate the chain, then store your bikes away

* Store up on calcium snow melting products. Don't use salt to melt snow and ice on concrete as it will damage the concrete. Shelves will be empty if you wait until the first ice storm.

* Check your furnace, air cleaner, dehumidifier filters. A heating system checkup by a heating contractor is a good idea, don't forget about the fireplace too.

* When was the last time your dryer ventilation pipe was cleaned out?

* Change burnt out exterior light bulbs...including Christmas lights left out all year long.

* Think about having a roof inspection if you have older shingles (+12 years)

* Make sure that your attic doesn't have any easy entry points, especially at soffit areas where one roof peak meets another. There are contractors that can raccoon proof your attic.

* Finally, if you know anyone who is new to our Country that has never experienced our winters, guide them. Explain how they will need gloves, scarves, winter hats, warm boots and a heavy winter coat. You will be surprised at how many new Canadians are shocked by their first January climate experience.
