Hapa Collaborative

Hapa Collaborative Hapa Collaborative is a landscape architecture and urban design practice established with placemaking, attentiveness and collaboration in mind.

At Hapa Collaborative, we see each project as an opportunity to partner, dream big and synthesize ideas wrought from many, often opposing, influences. Our goal is to evoke the poetry of the place and in doing so reveal something delightful but perhaps previously unseen. Most of all, we consider Hapa to be a contemporary voice for landscape architecture and a small, agile and fresh alternative to t

raditional firms. Hapa Collaborative works within the full breadth of scales from master plans to pocket parks, civic spaces to private residences, streetscapes to green roofs. However we specifically enjoy addressing the leftover spaces between buildings, applying the principles of landscape urbanism to city-building, site design and community consultation. We like to explore new methods and materials, forge new relationships and ultimately create places that people remember. Hapa means many things: half, mixed, or hybrid; originally a pejorative term for someone of part Asian ethnicity and, by extension, anything shaped by the collision of cultural influences. Hapa can be defined as an intentional disturbance – an explosion – that creates space for something new. It is an apt description of Vancouver’s cosmopolitan complexity and an emblem of our own profession’s mixed pedigree: landscape and architecture, art and science, nature and culture. Hapa is also a Japanese word for ‘leaf.’

Our studio of ten designers is a daily collaboration between people with different backgrounds and training, and a mix of skills and specialization. We love the fact that this mix is present in our design process and is often realized in the final design direction in our work. Read more about each of our Hapsters here: http://hapacobo.com/team/

We are excited to showcase the new student housing project at British Columbia Institute of Technology, the first new student residence on campus in nearly 40 years. Designed to support campus life year-round, the landscape creates an accessible and vibrant outdoor commons with gathering spaces, improved campus connections, rain gardens, and native planting integrated throughout the site. In keeping with the mass timber architecture, wood elements are woven throughout the landscape to create a warm and cohesive student experience.

🪴Thank you Sekhon & Sons Nursery Inc. ( ) for welcoming some of our Hapsters for a nursery visit.

🌱As landscape architects and designers, understanding where plants come from and collaborating closely with nurseries is essential to creating resilient, vibrant outdoor spaces. It was valuable to learn more about plant sourcing, quality control, species availability, seasonal timing, and how these factors influence sustainable planting palettes and construction coordination in landscape architecture.

We’re honoured to share that the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, completed in collaboration with xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nation, has received the 2026 CSLA Medium-Scale Public Landscapes Award.

Working alongside UBC, the Museum, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm representatives, the project reimagines the landscape through a contemporary xʷməθkʷəy̓əm lens, creating an authentic and living representation of culture, ecology, and place. Rooted in the concept of the “forest garden,” the design restores native planting communities while creating spaces for food, medicine, craft, and ceremony that honour the Nation’s continued presence on these lands.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this meaningful project.

Over the weekend, we had the opportunity to attend Design Victoria (), joining Reliance Properties () and DAU Studio () for the Saturday evening party at the Capital Cultural District, also known as Capital Yard. It was great to connect, exchange ideas, and be part of the broader design conversation.

Thank you to everyone who came out, we appreciated the time we shared.

Leadership means driving positive change through thoughtfully designed spaces. It means continuously learning, challenging ourselves, and designing with purpose.

It means learning about our environment, materials, technologies, and creative design solutions, championing outdoor spaces that strengthen communities, keeping users at the center of every design decision, and fostering a collaborative environment where every perspective matters. True leadership is demonstrated through the everyday actions that shape better places and stronger teams.

Gastown Public Spaces Plan Phase 3 has been unanimously approved by Vancouver City Council. Last week, we presented our work on the Gastown Public Spaces Plan to Council, where they voted in support of our Phase 2 work — an important milestone in advancing this initiative.

We would like to thank the City of Vancouver (), Gastown Business Improvement Society (), Urban Forum Associates, Gehl (), Stantec (), Luxton & Associates ( ), Jon Stover & Associates, Meaningful Access, and EOS Lightmedia () for their collaboration and contributions throughout Phase 2.

We appreciate the thoughtful feedback shared during the meeting and look forward to continuing the refine and advance the plan.

Gastown is situated on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We understand the complex history of the neighbourhood and hope to bring indigenous visibility into it’s public realm.

👏🏻:🎉Congratulations to Joseph Fry on being elected as a CSLA Fellow.

As the founding principal of Hapa Collaborative, Joseph has become a contemporary voice for landscape architecture and urban design in Vancouver through more than three decades of thoughtful leadership, creativity, and advocacy.
His work reflects a deep commitment to the civic, social, economic, and environmental value of placemaking, seen in landmark public spaces including šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square, Foot of Lonsdale Plaza, Sun Hop Park, and Sp’akw’us Feather Park.

Beyond practice, Joseph has made lasting contributions through mentorship, public service, education, and volunteering with urban design panels, heritage commissions, BCSLA committees, and with the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at UBC.

Investiture to the College of Fellows is one of the highest honors the CSLA bestows on its members and is a celebration of an outstanding career and meaningful impact on communities across British Columbia and beyond.
