Solid stairs come down to three things you’ll never see once the finishes go on: layout, support, and connections. Get those right and they stay quiet and solid for decades. As a carpenter, when walking up a set of stairs the first thing to notice is any deflection, movement, and bounce. Build stairs the right way, and using the right material, you’ll never regret it.

On this project, the trickiest part was tying everything in as cleanly as possible. We were tying our aluminum soffit J-Channel into the existing stucco.

This is what we came up with.

Details like this are the ones you stop noticing when they’re done right. That’s the goal.

Planning a renovation? Let’s talk it through.

Keeping clients in the loop is one of the most important parts of my job.

Since implementing JobTread, I’ve been more organized, more efficient, and able to give clients real peace of mind from start to finish.

The first thing clients tell me is how much they like seeing daily updates. JobTread makes that easy to deliver.

I’m still getting the full platform dialed in, but it’s already one of the best things I’ve implemented since starting my business.

On site today at our Burnaby project, and it’s moving along nicely.

It’s been a few months in and the Mileseey S50C is still my go to every day when I need accurate and efficient measurements.

It’s taken its share of abuse on site and it’s still reading accurate, shot after shot. The camera targeting makes long outdoor measurements easy, even in bright light.

When a tool keeps earning its spot to be used daily it definitely has to impress me

Progress update at our Pender project: Ready for windows. Unique project all around going ICF to the roof. Over the course of the last 6 months part time we’ve put in 35 days, majority as a two man crew from footings to roof . Tons of hard work, excited for it to get to lock up. Windows going in, and MEP rough ins 👊 Trusses ready for the garage 👀

Airtightness is one of those details you can’t see once the drywall and siding goes up, but you’ll feel it every day you live in the house. I Started in construction working for a builder who focused a lot on high-performance homes changed how I started to think about framing, and about keeping the air and vapour barriers continuous from footing to roof. In BC, the minimum for new homes is Step code 3 of the Energy Step Code, which works out to 2.5 air changes per hour at 50 pascals (ACH50). On this ICF build, we’re aiming for under 1.0, and we see no reason to not be even closer to passive .60ACH. It’s easy to lose that performance with rushed details around windows, doors, penetrations, and transitions, so once rough ins go in, insulation, and vapour barrier are complete, we’ll run a blower door test to see exactly where we land. Tight is only half of it. A proper heat loss calculation will let us size the mechanical system correctly. Too big and it short cycles, turning on and off constantly. Too small and it runs nonstop trying to keep up. Build tight, ventilate right? Matt Risinger . Follow along for the test results.

Stacked framing means lining up the studs, joists, and rafters so every piece sits directly on top of the one below it. Code doesn’t require it, but pulling every layout from the same corner barely adds any time and ultimately delivers a cleaner product. It gives the load a direct path from roof to foundation and leaves open, straight runs for plumbing, electrical, and HVAC with less drilling and back framing after rough-ins. It’s one of those small details most people will never notice, but it says a lot about how a house is built. What do you think?
