National Indigenous History Month is an opportunity to learn about the histories that continue to shape the relationship between Indigenous peoples and Canada today.

This learning is not about dwelling in the past or meant to inspire guilt and shame. It is about understanding how these histories continue to shape the present, so we can work toward a better future together.

Our friends, David Suzuki and Tara Cullis, are back from their Stronger Together tour through Ontario, where they heard from grassroots groups, local governments, Indigenous leaders, adaptation and preparedness experts and more, on how communities are building care, connection and resilience in the face of rising climate disasters — like floods, heat domes, wildfires, droughts, etc.

Join them online on June 3rd at noon Pacific (3 pm Eastern) for a conversation on how we can take care of each other in these times of greater climate risk, such that no one is left behind.

In this APTN segment, Managing Director of Sacred Earth Serena and Kwatuuma Cole Sayers founder of Indigenous Power Coalition reflect on Canada’s federal electricity strategy, false climate solutions, nuclear energy, Indigenous sovereignty, and the need for a truly just transition.

Canada’s proposed federal electricity strategy positions electrification as central to the country’s economic and energy future, but serious concerns remain around the continued reliance on LNG, nuclear energy, carbon capture, and large-scale extractive development under the banner of “clean growth.”

In this response, Serena Mendizabal, Managing Director at Sacred Earth, reflects on the implications of the strategy for Indigenous sovereignty, environmental protection, and climate justice.

This statement examines how increasing energy demand tied to AI infrastructure, data centres, critical minerals, and export-oriented industries risks deepening pressures on Indigenous lands and waters while falling short of a truly just energy transition.

“Canada had the opportunity to truly lead on accelerating the expansion of renewables into 2050 — instead, the government gave us a fraught vision reliant on fossil fuels, disproven solutions, and Canada’s status quo: profit > people and planet.”

Our Sacred Earth team recently returned to Little Buffalo for another meaningful week alongside the Lubicon Cree community 🦬

Throughout the week, we spent time with familiar faces at the school sharing and learning together about Indigenous food sovereignty, traditional plant medicine and food systems, the impacts of the oil industry on the community, and the importance of protecting the land and our relationship with her.

One of our many highlights was spending time with Kokum Lillian, a member of the Lubicon Cree and friend of Sacred Earth, who joined us each day to share Cree language and stories from her time growing up 💕

We also gathered with community members for an evening of food, Energy Bingo, and conversations about energy sovereignty and community-led solutions, complete with delicious moose stew and bannock shared together.

Our team is deeply grateful to the students, staff, and community members who welcomed us so warmly once again. It continues to be both an honour and privilege to learn, grow, and build good relationships with our communities across Turtle Island.

Already looking forward to the next time we gather together!

Sacred Earth and the Technoscience Research Unit are inviting Indigenous participants to share their perspectives on critical minerals through a paid research interview.

This opportunity is part of the community-based study: “Is this a Just Transition?: Indigenous Perspectives on Critical Minerals in the Energy Transition.”

As the world moves away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy, demand for critical minerals is rapidly increasing. Materials like silicon metal for solar panels, manganese for wind turbines, and lithium for batteries are essential to the technologies powering the energy transition.

But as this transition unfolds, it is vital that we do not repeat the harms and injustices of the fossil fuel era.

This research aims to better understand Indigenous perspectives and experiences related to critical minerals and the energy transition, areas where there is currently limited scholarship centered on First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities in Canada. Existing conversations about critical mineral supply chains often overlook the social, environmental, cultural, historical, and land-based relationships that are deeply important to Indigenous communities.

We are seeking Indigenous participants for virtual interviews (approximately 2 hours).

Honorarium provided:
• $250 CAD for completing the interview
• $100 CAD for reviewing your interview transcript

Honorariums can be provided by cheque or as a gift card to a retailer of your choice (where applicable).

Red Dress Day is about awareness that must turn into action.

Indigenous women, girls, and Two Spirit relatives continue to go missing and are taken at disproportionate rates across so-called Canada. This national crisis is not something in the past, it is still ongoing.

Awareness is also knowing the names, listening to families, and understanding the systems that allow this violence to continue. It also means supporting community led work that protects, uplifts, and keeps people safe.

Learn. Share. Speak up.

Spaces where critical discussions are had and decisions get made don’t always reflect the communities most impacted by them. That’s something we’re working to change.

This week in Montreal, is speaking at the Electrify Society Summit happening May 5th-6th, bringing forward her experience from working for a just energy transition, Indigenous leadership, and community-led solutions into conversations about energy and electrification.

If you’re in Montreal this week, join us.

On Earth Day, we are reminded that connection to the Earth is not something separate from our daily lives.

It is something we carry, practice, and return to.

Across many cultures and communities, the Earth is understood as a living relative. Our relationship with her is built through presence, care, respect, and responsibility.

At a time when the planet is under increasing pressure, reconnecting is not just personal. It is necessary.

Connection leads to care.
Care is a catalyst for action.

Today, and every day, our team at Sacred Earth strives to return to that relationship, and uphold it.

The country is at a turning point.

In a new op-ed with National Observer, our Executive Director lays out the case for a clean, connected electricity grid that shares power across provinces.

Right now, our system is fragmented. That limits how we use renewable energy and keeps costs higher than they need to be. But this can change.

A connected grid can move clean power across regions, lower costs, build a more reliable system for all.

Although our team is no longer in Ottawa for our lobbying, we all must continue pushing for this to our political representatives because the barriers to implementation are not technical, they are political.
