One thing I recommend doing in October is paying attention to what you're bringing back into the house.

Patio cushions, plant pots, seasonal decorations, firewood, and other things that have been sitting outside or in a shed can sometimes have a spider tucked underneath or behind them.

Give those items a quick check before carrying them indoors.

It's also a good time to clear fallen leaves from beside the house. Wet leaves sitting against the foundation create protected areas for all kinds of small insects, and wherever there's insect activity, spiders aren't usually far away.

A few minutes spent tidying these areas now can help reduce what ends up inside later in the fall.

I included some more October prevention tips in this month's journal.

October is usually when I hear from Metro Vancouver homeowners who suddenly start finding spiders inside rooms where they haven't noticed them before.

It might be one crossing the hallway in the evening, another downstairs a few days later, and then one near the laundry room.

When that happens, people sometimes assume there's a large spider problem somewhere inside the house. That's not always the case.

This time of year, spiders can simply be finding their way indoors through small openings as conditions outside change.

I recently visited a home where that was exactly what was happening. The spiders were turning up in different rooms, and after checking the property, we found several small ways they could be getting inside.

I shared the full visit in this month's journal.

I always appreciate when a Metro Vancouver customer takes a minute to share how things went after we helped with a pest issue.

Hereโ€™s a recent 5-star review from Erin Dreyer:
โ€œGreat service! Friendly, professional, and very knowledgeable. They arrived on time, did a thorough job, and the results were noticeable right away. Highly recommend!โ€

With spider problems, a careful inspection matters because the obvious web is often only part of what needs attention.

Thanks, Erin, for taking the time to leave us a review.

When Iโ€™m looking into repeated spider activity, Iโ€™m usually more interested in the location than the spider itself.

If fresh webbing keeps showing up around the same window, garage door, or storage area, thereโ€™s usually a reason that spot keeps working for them.

Around Metro Vancouver, I often find insect activity near lights, sheltered gaps, garages, and quieter parts of the home. Those are the things I want to identify first.

From there, the work is focused on the active areas while also dealing with access points and the conditions that keep attracting insects.

That approach usually makes more sense than simply clearing webs every few days and waiting for them to come back.

If you want to cut down on spiders around the house, Iโ€™d start with the places that donโ€™t get checked very often.

Have a look around garage corners, storage shelves, window frames, door edges, and utility openings. Those are some of the spots where spiders can settle without being disturbed.

Exterior lights are worth thinking about too. If insects gather around a light every evening, spiders often follow because that gives them an easy food source.

Small repairs like replacing worn seals and fixing damaged screens can make a noticeable difference over time.

I shared more from a recent Metro Vancouver spider job in this monthโ€™s journal.

Around September, I started noticing a different kind of spider call across Metro Vancouver.

By this point in the year, homeowners are often seeing activity closer to garages, entry doors, basement windows, and other sheltered parts of the house.

It usually isnโ€™t a large number of spiders. Itโ€™s more often the same web returning in one corner, something showing up beside the garage door, or a spider appearing indoors every few days.

Those patterns are useful because they tell you where to look.

I recently dealt with a home where the garage kept developing fresh webbing near the shelving and window. Once I looked closer, the real issue was insects getting in through worn weather stripping and small exterior gaps.

I wrote up the full job in this monthโ€™s journal.

โ€œI cannot recommend this company enough, especially our technician, Ryan! After struggling with another pest control company for four months, thankfully, we called this team instead. They were incredibly responsive and booked our service within just three business days. If you want the job done right the first time without being dragged along for months, save yourself the headache and call these guys. Huge thanks to Ryan for his professionalism and for finally giving us our peace of mind back!โ€

I really appreciate feedback like this. Pest problems are frustrating enough without homeowners feeling like they are being left waiting or pushed through a process that never seems to end. Keeping things clear, responsive, and properly handled from the start is always the goal.

When I'm dealing with a wasp problem, I'm not just looking at the wasps flying around the yard.

The first thing I want to know is where the nest is.

Around Metro Vancouver, I usually start by checking the roofline, eaves, decks, sheds, fences, and trees because that's where I find most nests during August.

Once I know where the activity is coming from, I can deal with the nest safely. Then I look around the rest of the property for anything that's encouraging the wasps to stick around, like fallen fruit, food scraps, or sheltered areas where new nests could start.

The best results usually come from doing bothโ€”removing the active nest and helping homeowners make the property less inviting for wasps in the future.

If you're seeing more wasps around your home than usual, our wasp prevention page is here: ๐Ÿ‘‰ [https://knockoutpestcontrol.ca/spiders]

Before you call anyone about wasps, spend a few minutes watching where they're flying.

I always tell homeowners not to focus on the wasps themselves at first. Watch them for a minute or two and see if they keep heading back to the same spot.

Then take a walk around the property.

Check under the eaves, around the roofline, underneath the deck, inside sheds, and along fence lines. Those are some of the most common places I find nests this time of year.

It also helps to pick up fallen fruit, keep rubbish bin lids closed, and cover food or sugary drinks when you're eating outside.

These small things won't remove an active nest, but they can make your yard a lot less attractive to wasps.

I covered more from a recent wasp job here in Metro Vancouver in this month's journal.

I get a lot more wasp calls around Metro Vancouver in August than any other time of the summer.

Most homeowners don't notice the nest first. They notice the wasps.

A couple flying around the deck. One or two showing up every time they sit down to eat outside. Before long, they're seeing them around the barbecue, the patio table, and even near the back door.

Those small signs are usually worth paying attention to.

By August, wasp nests have had months to grow, so it's normal to see more activity than you did earlier in the summer.

I recently handled a wasp job where the homeowners had stopped eating outside because the wasps kept showing up.

I wrote up the full job and what we found in this month's journal entry.
