With dramatic angled pedestrian bridges weaving across all five floors, Allard Hall’s multi-storey atrium is a dynamic hub of activity for the school. Balconies—or ‘Nests’— sculpted at the leading edge of each grand staircase offer perches for pause and contemplation, informal learning, and spontaneous interaction. Functional circulation links become ‘branches’ of communication.

These unprogrammed spaces and the expressive perspectives they orchestrate foster the social connectivity and creative spontaneity essential to artistic innovations. The open, flexible atrium doubles as a grand lobby, ideal for exhibitions, art installations, receptions, and gathering during event intermissions. The ground floor adjacency of the Mitchell Art Gallery—a public institution committed to a diversified curatorial practice—enables exhibitions and events to cross-pollinate.

PechaKucha Night Vol.62

Venelin Koklaov, Principal of Revery Architecture, told the story of concept to completion of the recently completed Freedom Mobile Arch. A journey from the earliest sketches to the first performances, tracing every stage of the project’s evolution in between.

One of the world’s longest mass-timber arch structures, the project touches down lightly at three points in the landscape, preserving the picturesque view of the North Shore Mountains. Across 20 images, the audience followed the project’s multi-year journey, each frame revealing a distinct moment in its evolution. From harvesting the timber to installing some of the largest timber arches on the Westcoast, a world-class team brought this one-of-a-kind structure to life with remarkable fidelity to the original vision.

Sen̓ákw is a landmark mixed-use development that promotes reconciliation and celebrates the reclamation of unceded territories with the homecoming of the Squamish Nation to their ancestral lands. Situated on a 10.5-acre site in a slice of what was once an 84-acre parcel home to the Squamish village of Sen̓ákw, the project seeks to rebuild a resilient and inclusive community connected to its rich natural setting and significant history.

Inspired by the importance of nature, community kinships, and collective well-being in Squamish culture, the project advances a unique “village in the park” vision wherein 11 towers with cultural, commercial, and recreational amenities are orchestrated across a new urban park. Thoughtful siting and orientation promote the passage of air, light, and pedestrians through the site to support a healthy and vibrant community.
