Physical model-making has long been part of the design process at Leckie Studio. Our model workshop provides a dedicated space for the team to work through ideas at different scales, testing form, proportion, and spatial relationships through making.

A home designed to evolve.

The first completed ADDAPT home demonstrates how a single structure can accommodate different ways of living over time. Its infrastructure and spatial planning allow the home to be reconfigured as circumstances change, from one household to multiple dwellings, without changing the fundamental structure.

For Leckie Studio adaptability is closely tied to longevity. A building cannot anticipate every future use, but it can be designed to accommodate change.

The next chapter of the project brings Lock & Mortice furniture into the Addapt home, with pieces designed to endure as the spaces around them evolve. More to come, soon.

Over the years, Leckie Studio has served as a testing ground for ideas that extend beyond conventional architectural practice. Addapt began in this way—as a research project exploring how housing could adapt to changing needs while supporting greater density in existing neighbourhoods.

Now, Addapt has launched independently as .

Built around a prefabricated, component-based system, Addapt is designed to accommodate different sites, households, and dwelling configurations over time. The project considers how space planning, infrastructure, and construction can work together to support adaptable housing and the gentle densification of existing neighbourhoods.

Most homes are designed around a single way of living. Addapt starts from a different premise: that a home should be able to change as the lives within it do.

For the latest Design Unlocked, Michael Leckie of Leckie Studio introduces a housing system designed to accommodate changing circumstances over time.

Beginning with a 2,400-square-foot structure, Addapt can be reconfigured as needed, allowing one home to become several, and spaces to take on new purposes as life changes. Rather than preserving a building in one fixed state, Addapt gives it the capacity to evolve.

It is a reconsideration of what makes a home enduring: not simply how long it lasts, but how long it can remain useful as circumstances change. A conversation about adaptability, longevity, and the kind of permanence that makes room for the future.
