Summary of British Columbia sewage news

As of May 2026, major British Columbia sewage news is dominated by massive cost overruns at the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant (now \(\approx\$3.86\) billion) leading to calls for a public inquiry. Other key updates include a lawsuit against Metro Vancouver regarding the Annacis Island plant and a $4B downsizing of the Iona Island project.

Major Infrastructure Projects & Controversies (2025-2026):
- North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant: The project budget has exploded from an original estimate of $700 million to nearly $3.86 billion. Mayors are demanding a public inquiry due to the astronomical cost overruns, which are causing major tax increases for local residents.

- North Shore Taxpayer Impact: Households on the North Shore face immediate additional charges of roughly $590, expected to rise to nearly $1,200 annually by 2028 for sewage and drainage costs.

- Iona Island Wastewater Plant: Metro Vancouver has scaled back plans to upgrade the Iona Island plant in Richmond, aiming for a $6 billion plan instead of a previous $10 billion proposal, intended to meet regulatory standards.

- Annacis Island Lawsuit: Contractor Michels Canada filed a $5.5 million lawsuit in May 2026 related to improvements at the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Delta.

Environmental & Operational News:
- ernie Wastewater Release: In March 2026, the City of Fernie was forced to release untreated wastewater due to extreme rainfall overloading the system.

- Columere Park Penalty: In October 2025, a developer in the East Kootenays was penalized for discharging treated wastewater with f***l coliform levels up to 19,900% above allowed limits.

- Prince Rupert Upgrade: A new, modernized wastewater treatment facility is under development in Prince Rupert as of September 2025 to improve water quality and meet federal regulations.

- Vancouver Island Improvements: Upgrades are underway at the Crofton Sewage Treatment Plant in North Cowichan to improve capacity and compliance.

North Vancouver mayors call for inquiry into $3.86B wastewater treatment project

The North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant was first announced in 2011 as a $700-million project, but its estimated cost has since ballooned to $3.86 billion, and its timeline for completion has been pushed back from 2020 to 2030.

Residents allege the mistake made basement suite of Lynn Valley home 'uninhabitable'

The lawsuit claims the company was negligent in using unsuitable equipment for the job.

As a result, the homeowners allege they suffered over $120,500 in damages, including over $48,000 in emergency repairs, over $57,000 in replacing the contents of their home, over $12,000 in additional living expenses plus an insurance deductible of $2,500.

A $3 billion cost overrun is reason enough for public inquiry
David Eby must address the North Shore sewage plant problems

If there was ever a reason for the province to take a closer look at the workings of Metro Vancouver, we can’t think of a much better one than the massive boondoggle the new North Shore wastewater treatment plant has become. Skyrocketing costs for the project have left North Shore taxpayers facing massive increases to their annual utility bills.

And that pain is projected to continue for the next three decades. The suggestion that every household should get a gold-plated toilet for this price doesn’t seem too far off.

Applications are open for the Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s 2026 SepticSmart Rebate Program, which provides a financial incentive for property owners to maintain their septic systems.

As part of the program, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) will cover up to 75% of the eligible expenses for specific septic services, subject to a maximum amount. This can help make septic system maintenance more accessible and affordable for property owners

Plans underway to evacuate medical personnel from northern Ontario First Nation still under state of emergency
3 deaths since evacuations started

Cryptosporidium, a parasite, was discovered in Kashechewan’s water after issues with the water treatment plant
The nursing clinic in Kashechewan was closed for several weeks due to a sewage backup. Now plans are in place for all remaining personnel to leave the community, which has been in a state of emergency since Jan. 4. (Jonathan Migneault/CBC)

Indigenous Services Canada says it expects to evacuate all nurses and paramedics still working in Kashechewan First Nation on Monday.

In an email to CBC News, the federal government department said that the evacuation of remaining medical personnel will be dependent on flight availability. Once the nurses are gone, anyone still in the community who needs medical attention will have to travel to the neighbouring community of Fort Albany First Nation.

Depending on conditions, it takes about 45 minutes to drive to from Kashechewan to Fort Albany, crossing the frozen Albany River on a winter road.

Kashechewan Chief Hosea Wesley confirmed there are currently four paramedics and four nurses in the community.

Wesley said he is in talks with the federal government about building a shortcut to the ice road that has existed in years past. That shortcut could cut the travel time to Fort Albany to around 20 minutes.

Parasites confirmed in Kashechewan’s water supply, dozens ill
The ‘Do Not Consume’ water advisory remains in effect in Kashechewan as repairs to the water treatment plant continue.

A parasite that causes gastrointestinal illness is present in the drinking water on Kashechewan First Nation, Indigenous Services Canada has confirmed. The confirmation follows a water treatment system failure that forced the remote northern Ontario community to declare a state of emergency earlier this month.

“As of yesterday’s numbers, I think the number is 63 people that have tested positive,” said the First Nation’s executive director, Tyson Wesley, speaking with CTV News on Friday.

“However, the number of people that did get it is probably much higher than what’s been reported.”

Cause being investigated
Community leadership is investigating how the parasite, cryptosporidium, entered the water system. Wesley pointed to infrastructure failures at the outset of the crisis.

“I know one of the big issues that we’ve had at the beginning of this crisis was that high lift pumps malfunctioned, and also, the valve that connects, that’s supposed to protect or block the sewage from entering the water plant, failed,” Wesley said.

“I’m not too sure if that caused it.”

More sewage plant troubles emerging, but Metro Vancouver puts on happy face for 2026

Metro Vancouver is still discovering deficiencies at the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant site, four years after firing Spanish construction company Acciona.
That according to a due diligence committee report to the regional district’s liquid waste committee meeting on Jan. 21.
