Gravity Architecture sponsored and attended the Women of ’s September event last week: one of their monthly peer-led sessions within the WUDI Peer-to-Peer Mentorship Program that wraps up in October. We enjoyed supporting the committee and program; the discussion provided valuable insights that apply directly to British Columbia’s current market.

The September event, Raising Capital in Today’s Market, explored how developers, social housing providers, and equity partners are adjusting to low liquidity, changing population targets, and long residential hold periods. Building in BC’s current economy requires a new playbook to keep up. We pulled together our top highlights from the panel on what it takes to keep projects moving.

Last week, representatives of the Gravity team attended the Build Canada Homes affordable housing funding announcement where they announced a combined investment of 385 million to support affordable housing projects. Hosted by representatives of the government at both federal and provincial levels, the official announcement took place on-site in Edmonton at the Brentwood project, an income-subsidized rental development that is currently under construction.

Gravity remains committed to helping turn public investments into vibrant, long-lasting communities across Western Canada and we look forward to contributing and supporting to future affordable housing projects.

Shout out to Fillmore Construction who deserves special credit for tidying the Brentwood site for the event after a very wet summer season!

A little rewind to appreciate ’s Mount Pleasant 8, winner of the 2016 BILD Calgary Region SAM Award in the category of Best New Design (Villa/Duplex/Townhome 1,200 sq ft and over).

On a 30m x 36m corner lot, the project fit 8 units into one unified structure under original R-CG zoning, making it the only R-CG project in Calgary that exceeded 4 units back in 2017. At the time, the R-CG district was brand new and untested; developers were limited to just one building per site. Instead of separate 5-unit and 3-unit buildings, we had to connect them. To preserve private patios in the gap in between, we added a second-floor room to bridge the structures overhead. Presenting this real-world scenario to the City prompted a rule change that now allows multiple buildings on an R-CG parcel.

It was a Gravity Architecture project back then because it required professional oversight. Today, multi-residential projects of this scale can be designed at a lower fee by Gravity’s sister company, .

Completed Summer 2026: Maximizing capacity without sacrificing daylight or privacy.

For the Shaganappi Multi-Residential project, set out to balance a high unit count with neighbourhood privacy, complementing Calgary’s SW transit corridor.

The architecture breaks up the building’s scale with a pixelated 3D composition. Carved-out alcoves pull sunlight deep into the structure; balconies lined with warm wood-toned panels contrast against the metallic exterior to give the façade a natural glow from within. This dynamic street frontage echoes the modern geometry of the neighbouring LRT station while respecting the adjacent residential scale.

The end result is strategic massing that enables maximum value and longevity.

This new residential hub by will sit at the heart of the D'Arcy neighbourhood, bordering the local public golf course.

Framed by utility rights-of-way on three sides, the site takes on a U-shaped layout that directly responds to the North, South, and West constraints. Working closely with a consultant team, we revised the site plan to accommodate complex utility rights-of-way while maintaining the number of units.

The U-shaped orientation maximizes street frontage across three sides while establishing two primary access points along the open eastern boundary. The configuration wraps around a central green space to create a primary gathering node for both residents and neighbours, while an internal lane provides parking without disrupting the streetscape.
