Structure Fails After the Envelope Does
A lot of structural damage doesn’t start with the structure.
It usually starts with the building envelope.
When water gets past siding, flashing, or sheathing, it slowly damages:
• Wall framing
• Rim joists
• Floor systems
• Headers and beams
• Interior finishes
By the time cracks, rot, or movement show up inside, the issue has often been developing for years behind the wall.
Common early warning signs:
✔ Cracking drywall near windows or doors
✔ Soft spots around exterior walls
✔ Peeling paint or bubbling finishes
✔ Musty smells after rain
✔ Doors or windows starting to bind
The fix isn’t always major — early envelope repairs can prevent full structural rebuilds.
If you’re unsure what you’re seeing, a photo review can often tell you whether it’s cosmetic, envelope-related, or structural.
