Happy Spring! ☀️ 🌧️

This is the time of year to start fresh after a dark, cold & wet season in the PNW. There is a lot of planning & preparation for the growing season this time of year.

Here’s what we’re focusing on this month:
🌱 Write down 2-3 gardening goals for 2024.
🌱 Organize your seed inventory.
🌱 Write down the plants you want to grow this year.
🌱 Check when you need to start your plants & whether to start from seed or direct sow. DM me if you’re located in South Coastal BC, Canada & I can share a resource to help! 👩‍🌾
🌱 Buy your seeds & seed starting soil mixture.
🌱 Sow your seeds (So far, I have started: tomatoes, peppers, onions, leafy greens, cabbage, bush/pole beans, peas).
🌱 Bring your gardening tools & equipment out from hibernation. 🐻

If you’ve been wanting to make 2024 the year you REALLY start your dream garden, follow along for tips & inspiration!

Happy Thanksgiving, gardeners!

As we gather together this weekend, let’s take a moment to acknowledge Canada’s history of the mistreatment of Indigenous Peoples that continues today. We raise our hands in respect to the immense knowledge and traditions of Indigenous Peoples’ long history in agriculture - always cultivating the land with 7 generations in mind. With gratitude, we celebrate rich Indigenous cuisine by preparing a recipe that uses 3 significant plants cultivated by Indigenous Peoples called the Three Sisters Soup from the cookbook: “Tawâw: Progressive Indigenous Cuisine”. Go check out their amazing recipes!

Here is the book’s description of the recipe:
“In gardening terms, they are companion plants (squash, corn & beans), supporting and nurturing one another as they grow. The corn shoots skyward, providing a natural pole for the beans to follow as they climb. As they do, they provide some extra support to keep the corn upright. The squash grows low, controlling weeds and keeping the sun off the soil to prevent unnecessary moisture loss. Nutritionally, they provide a combination of protein (beans), carbohydrates (corn and squash), and vitamins. The squash even provides a small amount of fat in the oil contained in the seeds. The three companions also happen to taste great together.”

Every new gardener shares with me how challenging it can be to germinate carrot seeds. I HEAR YOU! I have been growing carrots for 8 years and I still find nothing is 100% guaranteed. I’ve tried overhead irrigation, 2 x 4’s, burlap, and sometimes the seeds still don’t germinate. Especially when you live in Vancouver where you may not have rain for months!

This year, I shifted my mindset to not designating an entire garden bed to carrots, instead broadcasting the seeds wherever I grow other vegetables. It works! The mulch and shade from the other vegetables did the hard work that I’ve been doing for years with similar results. I am never going back to the old methods of carrot germination. I am a chaos carrot believer now. 🥲🥕
