La zoothérapie est une intervention fait par un intervenant formé en zoothérapie (le zoothérapeute), avec un animal sélectionné (l'animal partenaire d'intervention en zoothérapie appelé aussi APIZ), auprès d'une personne ayant des besoins ciblés (personne aidée). L'objectif de l'intervention en zoothérapie est l'amélioration du bien-être psychologique, physique, affectif, cognitif ou social selon les besoins spécifiques de l’individu aidé.
