🌊 RICHIBUCTO HOMEOWNERS: LIFE BY THE WATER IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT WHAT’S HAPPENING BENEATH YOUR HOME?

Richibucto sits along the Richibucto River near the Northumberland Strait, in an area shaped by fishing, forestry and strong Acadian and Mi’kmaq heritage. With its waterfront and connection to the surrounding coastal communities, it’s a distinctive part of eastern New Brunswick.

But no matter how close your home is to the water, there’s something that can come naturally from the ground beneath it: radon.

RADON ISN’T JUST AN ā€œOLD HOMEā€ PROBLEM.

A century-old house, a renovated property and a BRAND-NEW HOME can all have elevated radon levels. Radon can enter through cracks, gaps and other openings where a building meets the ground, and you simply can’t tell the level by looking at a home.

You can’t see it, smell it or taste it, and even neighbouring properties can have very different levels. The only way to know your home’s radon level is to test.

If elevated levels are found, they can be significantly reduced with a properly designed mitigation system. With certified and experienced radon professionals, Radon Plus can help you understand your results and determine the right next steps.

🌲 NACKAWIC HOMEOWNERS: HOME OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST AXE, BUT THERE’S SOMETHING ELSE WORTH KNOWING ABOUT THE GROUND šŸŖ“

Nackawic is famous for its enormous World’s Largest Axe, standing proudly along the Saint John River and celebrating the community’s deep forestry roots. With its riverfront setting, trails and outdoor spaces, Nackawic has plenty of reasons for residents to be proud of where they call home.

But there’s something else connected to the ground beneath our communities that deserves attention:

RADON.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, and it can enter older homes, renovated homes and even BRAND-NEW construction. A new foundation, modern building materials or an energy-efficient home doesn’t automatically mean radon levels are low.

You can’t see it, smell it or taste it, and two homes in the same neighbourhood can have completely different radon levels.

The only way to know your home’s radon level is to test. If elevated levels are found, they can be significantly reduced with a properly designed mitigation system.

With certified and experienced radon professionals, Radon Plus can help you understand your results and determine the right next steps for your home.

🌾 FLORENCEVILLE-BRISTOL HOMEOWNERS: POTATO COUNTRY HAS SOMETHING ELSE BENEATH THE GROUND šŸ„”

Florenceville-Bristol sits in the heart of New Brunswick’s potato country and is home to the Potato World Museum, celebrating a crop that has helped shape the region for generations. The community is surrounded by the beautiful Saint John River Valley, rich farmland and that unmistakable rural New Brunswick landscape.

But potatoes aren’t the only thing connected to the ground around our homes.

RADON COMES NATURALLY FROM THE GROUND, AND IT CAN ENTER ANY HOME.

Whether your home is an older farmhouse, a renovated property, or BRAND-NEW construction, age alone cannot tell you whether elevated radon levels are present.

Radon can enter through cracks, gaps and other openings where a building meets the soil. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it, and your neighbour’s radon result doesn’t tell you yours.

The only way to know your home’s radon level is to test. If elevated levels are found, they can be significantly reduced with a properly designed mitigation system.

With certified and experienced radon professionals, Radon Plus can help you understand your results and determine the right next steps for your home.

Free radon tests back in provincial libraries

2026 marks second year for test distribution program
RELEASE

Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour

October 15, 2026

FREDERICTON (GNB) – Free radon test kits are available at public libraries across the province beginning today.

The government and its public libraries are continuing to partner with the New Brunswick Research and Productivity Council to provide the free testing.

ā€œWe distributed 11,996 kits to New Brunswickers last year,ā€ said Post-Secondary Education and Training Minister Jean-Claude D’Amours. ā€œI am so pleased with how successful the program was the first time, and hope it will grow during its second year as even more New Brunswickers take advantage of this opportunity.ā€

The Radon Test Distribution Program was first launched in 2025 with the council and NB Lung to coincide with the start of heating season. NB Lung will continue to promote the program and offer educational information on the importance of radon testing.

The kits include a long-term testing device that must be kept in the home for at least 91 days, as well as information about radon gas provided by the Department of Health.

To get the most accurate results, it is suggested radon tests be conducted during the colder months when homes are more often closed. Distribution of test kits will end on Feb. 28, 2027.

Libraries are also still accepting completed tests from last year. Homeowners should return the tests to their local public library so that they can be forwarded to the council.

Radon is an invisible, odourless and tasteless radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. Radon gas can enter a home very easily through cracks in foundation floors and walls, gaps around service pipes, floor drains and unsealed sump pits. Too much radon can have a negative impact on a person’s health.

It is estimated that one in four homes in New Brunswick has high radon levels.

🌲 WOODSTOCK HOMEOWNERS: YOUR HOME HAS A HISTORY, BUT DO YOU KNOW ITS RADON LEVEL?

Woodstock is one of New Brunswick’s most historic communities, with beautiful heritage architecture and a location along the Saint John and Meduxnekeag rivers. The area has long been an important hub in the upper Saint John River Valley, combining small-town character with some seriously beautiful New Brunswick scenery.

But whether your Woodstock home is a historic property, a renovated family home, or BRAND-NEW construction, its age doesn’t tell you what its radon level is.

RADON CAN BE PRESENT IN ANY TYPE OF HOME.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the ground beneath us and can enter through openings where a building meets the soil.

You can’t see it, smell it or taste it, and even homes on the same street can have very different radon levels. The only way to know what’s happening inside your home is to test.

If elevated levels are found, they can be significantly reduced with a properly designed mitigation system. With certified and experienced radon professionals, Radon Plus can help you understand your results and determine the right next steps.

🌊 PERTH-ANDOVER HOMEOWNERS: LIVING BY THE RIVER IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT WHAT’S BENEATH YOUR HOME?

Perth-Andover sits along the Saint John River in the upper river valley, surrounded by the kind of scenery that makes western New Brunswick special. It’s a community where the river and the land are a big part of everyday life.

And speaking of the land, there’s something else homeowners should know about that comes naturally from the ground:

RADON.

Radon can enter older homes, renovated homes and BRAND-NEW homes. In fact, Health Canada recommends testing every home, regardless of its location or building type, because testing is the only way to know the radon level in a specific home.

You can’t see it, smell it or taste it, and the house next door can have a completely different level than yours. New construction doesn’t guarantee low radon levels either, which is why Health Canada recommends testing newly built homes after occupancy.

If elevated levels are found, proven mitigation methods can significantly reduce them. With certified and experienced radon professionals, Radon Plus can help you understand your results and determine the right next steps.

šŸ¦ž BOUCTOUCHE HOMEOWNERS: BEAUTIFUL COASTLINE, ACADIAN ROOTS AND ONE IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN’T SEE

Bouctouche is a community rich in Acadian culture, sitting along the beautiful Northumberland Strait. It’s also home to the incredible Irving Eco-Centre and Bouctouche Dune, where a long boardwalk lets visitors explore one of the area’s remarkable coastal ecosystems.

There’s plenty to see around Bouctouche, but there’s one thing homeowners can’t see at all: radon.

RADON CAN BE PRESENT IN ANY HOME, INCLUDING A BRAND-NEW ONE.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the ground beneath us. It can enter through cracks, gaps and other openings where your home meets the soil, regardless of whether your house was built decades ago or just recently.

You can’t see it, smell it or taste it, and two homes on the same street can have very different radon levels. That’s why your neighbour’s test result can’t tell you what’s happening inside your home.
