A while back we posted about a feature ceiling we were working on for the ceremony room at the Whitehorse General Hospital - Mental Wellness Unit .

Here are a couple photos of the finished project.

The radial panells and vertical returns are banded plain sliced white oak veneer plywood to match the slats and other woodwork in the room, and are only meant to frame and highlight the carved plaque.

The plaque is 36" x 3" yellow cedar carved by Khàtinas.àxh - Ken Anderson. Ken is an award wining Tlingit carver who lives in Whitehorse.

The plaque represents the four elements, and is aligned with the cardinal directions. The round form of the ceiling and the alignment are both significant to the indiginous communities in the North.

The plaque conceals an exhaust duct that exhausts smoke used in ceremony.

Mode Projects conceived, designed, coordinated, supplied, and installed the ceiling on site in collaboration with Yukon Hospital Corporation, Unitech Construction Management, Ken Anderson, Ryfan Electric, Loft Mechanical, and Ron's Drywall.

Structural attachment and seismic restraint was desined and certified by RJC Engineers.

We are proud of this work, and hope that it brings value to the user groups and staff of the MWU.

Thanks to Unitech Construction Management, and the Yukon Hospital Corporations trust in us to deliver this unique element.

Did you know that Mode Projects is a Licenced Residential Builder in BC?

The licence is granted by BC Housing in an effort to ensure that builders are qualified to undertake the construction of new residential construction projects in BC.

To obtain the licence a business must meet the experiential, and educational requirements set forth by BC Housing, as well as, maintain their licence through residential sector focused continuing education.

They must also be able to provide proof of coverage through an approved New Home Warranty Insurance Provider in BC.

Putting this coverage in place involves a deep dive into the businesses administrative structure, books, processes, and financial health. This vetting process and the insurance provided is a two pronged means of consumer protection.

We are in the process of working on our first custom house project.

Pretty stoked on that.

Stay tuned for details.

Mode has been given the opportunity to design, supply, and install a feature ceiling at the Whitehorse General Hospital Mental Wellness Unit.

The technical name of the room is the Group Therapy Room, however it has been purpose built for use in ceremony by First Nations residents undergoing healing in the MWU. It incorporates geometry and scale important to the Kwanlin Dun peoples comprised of Southern Tutchone, Tagish, Tlingit and many other backgrounds. It also includes a purpose built exhaust system for use in smudging and other ceremony.

Kwanlin Dun stakeholders were consulted from the beginning of design development of the entire unit, and elements based on their input are incorporated throughout, the most prominent is the group therapy room.

The design requirements that we were given of importance were:
- Circular
- Natural materials
- Importance of the cardinal directions
- The four elements
- The healing nature of the space

We were lucky enough to be put in contact with Khàtinas.àxh - Ken Anderson by a dear friend in Whitehorse. Ken is a prominent award winning Tlingit carver who is designing and will provide the center piece plaque to the feature ceiling based on the design criteria provided.

Our PM John then took the consultants model in Revit and modeled our radial millwork around an illustrative representation of the plaque that you see in our concept model.

The plaque currently shown is illustrative only. The concept for the carving as described by Ken is - Four separate masks representing Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. The ceilings panels and the masks quadrants will both be aligned with the cardinal directions. A photo example of Kens work is shown in the photos above to give you an idea of the level of his skill.

To conceal the exhaust duct the mask will be stood off the millwork ceiling enough to permit proper air flow using stainless spacers so the exhaust does not detract from the ceilings design.

We are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with Ken on this centerpiece of the MWU project. Our work really only creating a frame and backdrop for his work. Our part is coordinating the required integration and installation into the adjacent construction, including administrative shop drawings and meeting the specifications required.

Should be neat, and kudos to our project manager John Hughes in the successful acceptance of his proposal by the Yukon Hospital Corporation.
