Not all septic tanks are built the same, and this year has really shown why.
Here's something a lot of folks don't realize. Concrete septic tanks generally come in one of two builds. Some are made in two pieces, a bottom section and a top section, joined together with a seam that runs around the middle of the tank. Others are poured as a single solid unit, one piece, with the only joint sitting right up at the top.
In a dry year, that difference doesn't come up much. But in a year like this one, it matters a lot.
With all the rain we've had, the groundwater table has climbed right up. On a two-piece tank, that seam around the middle can end up sitting below the water line. And if the seal isn't perfect, groundwater starts working its way in through it. That's a big part of why so many people are finding water getting into their systems right now. Extra groundwater in the tank means an overloaded system, and that's when the backups start.
A one-piece tank doesn't have that middle seam to worry about. It's poured solid, with the only joint up top, well above where the groundwater sits. One less way for water to sneak in, which is exactly what you want when the ground is as soaked as it's been this year.
It's the kind of thing you never think about until it becomes a problem. That's why, when we install, we go with the solid one-piece tanks. A little extra peace of mind, especially after the year we've just had.
