Not all septic tanks are built the same, and this year has really shown why.

Here's something a lot of folks don't realize. Concrete septic tanks generally come in one of two builds. Some are made in two pieces, a bottom section and a top section, joined together with a seam that runs around the middle of the tank. Others are poured as a single solid unit, one piece, with the only joint sitting right up at the top.

In a dry year, that difference doesn't come up much. But in a year like this one, it matters a lot.

With all the rain we've had, the groundwater table has climbed right up. On a two-piece tank, that seam around the middle can end up sitting below the water line. And if the seal isn't perfect, groundwater starts working its way in through it. That's a big part of why so many people are finding water getting into their systems right now. Extra groundwater in the tank means an overloaded system, and that's when the backups start.

A one-piece tank doesn't have that middle seam to worry about. It's poured solid, with the only joint up top, well above where the groundwater sits. One less way for water to sneak in, which is exactly what you want when the ground is as soaked as it's been this year.

It's the kind of thing you never think about until it becomes a problem. That's why, when we install, we go with the solid one-piece tanks. A little extra peace of mind, especially after the year we've just had.

What a difference a little sunshine makes! After all the rain we've been dealing with, this past week finally gave us a break, and we made the most of it. Drier ground meant we could get out there and get some installs done, and it felt great to be back at it.

It was a productive stretch all around, and we're grateful to everyone who had us out. Weeks like this are exactly what we've been waiting for.

Of course, not everything always goes according to plan. It happens. A few laughs, a little digging, and we got it sorted. All part of the job out here.☺️

Happy Canada Day from all of us here at Two Hills Septic!

After the spring we've all had, we figure a little sunshine is the least everyone deserves.

If you've been wondering where the sun ran off to, you're not alone.

And we'll be honest with you, this year is proving to be something of a challenge. For a company like ours, right here in Two Hills, that relies on at least a few dry days to get the work done, this season has been something else. The amount of rescheduling we've had to do has been, well, incredible.

And the numbers tell the story. That long stretch of rain at the end of May soaked the whole region. Just up the road, Vegreville picked up 109 mm and Lavoy 113 mm in about four days. To put that in perspective, our corner of the province normally sees somewhere around 70 to 90 mm for the entire month of June. So the County got more than a month's worth of rain in a matter of days, on top of an already soggy start to the season. Anyone farming around Two Hills, St. Paul, Vegreville or Mundare knows exactly what we're talking about.

But we're not ones to sit around and complain (much). Despite it all, we're out there doing what we can, from installs and ground work, to demolition jobs, and yes, the occasional adventure of pulling our own equipment out of the mud.

And it's the middle of June, hope everyone is having a great Monday. Some nice sunshine out there. Great way to start the week.

Just wanted to highlight a Multi-Unit we had the opportunity to install last week. We had a client call us, and after we took a water sample we found very high iron in their water, along with hardness and tannins. Kind of the trifecta of things a well can throw at you out here.

Now, a lot of folks figure iron and hardness are the same thing, but they're actually two different beasts. Hardness comes from calcium and magnesium, and over time it really takes a toll on the house. It's the chalky white buildup crusting up your faucets and shower heads, the scale that builds inside your boiler and hot water tank and makes them work harder, and that stubborn ring around the toilet bowl that just won't quit.

Iron is its own deal. It's usually what's behind those rusty orange stains in the sink and tub, the metallic taste, and the tan and orange staining that turns up on your laundry straight out of the wash.

Then you've got tannins, which come from organic matter in the ground like decaying leaves and vegetation. They can tint your water a yellowish, tea colour and even add a bit of a musty smell.
This Multi-Unit takes care of all three, so this client can get back to clear, clean and soft water straight from the tap. Easier on the fixtures and alot easier on the laundry.

Its been a week, can't remeber the last time we've seen so much rain. We have been positively "flooded" with service calls. However we were able to finish off the week with another happy and satified client with their new Water Cistern!
