A half-day spent exploring how mass timber is reshaping the way we design, manufacture, and build across Nova Scotia.

Last week we welcomed the WoodWorks Atlantic Mass Timber Tour to our facility in Trenton, one of three stops in Pictou County, each offering a different lens on how modern wood construction is transforming how we build:
• At the new RCMP Pictou County Detachment, the group saw civic infrastructure designed for long-term community service and resilience.
• At the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame, a project we built — they experienced how construction can support cultural spaces that preserve and celebrate local identity.
• Here at Eastcut, we walked visitors through how advanced off-site manufacturing is reshaping construction through streamlined delivery and quality outcomes.

Together these projects highlight mass timber as a fully integrated approach, linking design, fabrication, and installation, to improve how we deliver spaces and strengthen communities. 🪵

Mass timber is changing how we build.

At its core, mass timber refers to engineered wood products like cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam. These materials are made by layering and bonding wood into large structural components that can perform in many applications traditionally handled by steel and concrete.

The result is a building material that is strong, dimensionally stable, and manufactured to high precision. It also offers the potential for meaningful embodied carbon compared to conventional materials.

But mass timber is more than material. It’s a more predictable way to build.
At Eastcut, we approach mass timber through a manufacturing lens. Components are designed, coordinated, and prefabricated with precision, then assembled efficiently on site.

The advantages go beyond the material:
• Lower embodied carbon
• High dimensional precision
• Reduced on-site waste
• Faster, more efficient assembly

Mass timber isn’t just a material choice. It’s a better way to build.

At Eastcut, we manufacture critical parts of a building before construction begins on site.

From volumetric modules to panelized systems and mass timber, our work happens in parallel with site preparation, cutting timelines by 30–40%.

Inside our Trenton facility, digital models become real-world components using CNC-driven production and tightly coordinated workflows. The result? Fewer delays, tighter tolerances, and significantly less material waste than traditional construction.

For developers and communities, that means projects delivered with more certainty—on schedule, on spec, and with less risk built in.

Curious what that could look like for your next project? Let’s talk.

February marks African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia, guided this year by the theme Strength in Unity: Moving Forward with Purpose, Prosperity, Power and Progress.

African Nova Scotians have influenced this province for more than 400 years through resilience, leadership, and entrepreneurship, and this month is an opportunity to listen, learn, and take part in the events and conversations happening across the province while continuing to work toward a more connected and prosperous Nova Scotia.

Strong communities take long-term thinking, collaboration, and care.

Only one week to go! ⏳ Join us for the Building the Future: Embracing Panelized, Modular & Mass Timber Innovations webinar on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. AST.

Our GM & COO, Josh Dykens, will walk you through how Eastcut is bringing modular, panelized, and mass timber projects to life across Atlantic Canada — from schools and housing to community spaces.

Highlights include:
✅ Offsite construction advantages: speed, quality, efficiency, and safety
✅ Real regional projects, including Membertou Mass Timber and modular school developments
✅ How hybrid approaches are reshaping design and delivery in construction

A milestone moment for our team.

A new public housing development is moving ahead in Kentville, marking the largest fully modular multi-unit housing project we’ve worked on to date. Dora Construction Ltd and Eastcut will deliver the modular components, working with Passive Design Solutions on an energy-efficient design.

The development includes 30 apartments on Justice Way, with 10 fully accessible units, providing safe, affordable homes for approximately 100 people, including seniors and families. Construction begins this spring, with completion targeted for summer 2027.

More to come as construction gets underway.

We love showing how much is happening in Pictou County. Last week we welcomed Danny MacGillivray, MLA for Pictou Centre, and John White, MLA Glace Bay - Dominion, to our Trenton headquarters.

Tomorrow we’ll open our doors to NSCC students so they can see careers in manufacturing first-hand and meet the people making it happen. Here’s to growth! Our team is proud to keep building skills, careers, and opportunities right here in Nova Scotia.

Thank you for following along as we shared a snapshot of the projects, partnerships, and people that shape our communities. This final post offers a quiet moment to close out the series and reflect on the places—and the people—that bring communities together.

From all of us at the Macklan Group, wishing you a safe and happy holiday season.
