As we enter the holiday season and there may be some more time spent at home, we just wanted to suggest some things to think about as we enter into 2026.
How often should you get your panel serviced?
You should get your electrical panel professionally serviced every 3-5 years. But more often (yearly) if your home is older (40+ years), has frequent electrical issues (flickering lights, tripped breakers) or after major renovations/adding high-load appliances; a quick annual visual check by a homeowner is also recommended. Panels usually last 25-40 years, so consider replacement if yours is older or has problems like burning smells.
When to call an electrician
- Sparks, Burning Smells - a sign of overheating wires
- Warm/Hot Panel - breakers or the panel itself should not feel hot
- Flickering lights/buzzing - indicates loose connections or overloaded circuits
- Frequent tripping breakers - a sign of issues or an overloaded system.
- Outdated wiring (like k**b & tube)
How can a homeowner do electrical safety checks?
Homeowners can do basic electrical safety checks by looking for warning signs (see above) and practicing safe habits (not overloading circuits, using GFCIs/AFCIs), but major checks/upgrades REQUIRE permits and inspections through the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) website in Ontario, where you can even do some DIY work after getting a permit and ESA approval. For thorough safety, schedule professional inspections with a licensed electrical contractor, as they identify hidden issues like faulty wiring or outdated breakers.
Daily & monthly DIY Checks for homeowners:
- Inspect cords & plugs: look for frayed wires, cracks, or damaged insulation on appliance cords and plugs.
- Check outlets & switches: feel the warmth, listen for buzzing, or look for discoloration around them.
- Test GFCIs/AFCIs: press the “test” and “reset” button monthly to ensure they trip
- Avoid Overloading: don’t plug too many devices into an outlet or power strip, use power bars with surge protection cautiously.
