Throughout these few weeks we will be sharing Summer Sketches 2026.

A new chapter in our summer sketchbook—today, as a part of the OAA Summer Sketches Series, we are sharing the work of Mayesha Alam (Intern Architect).

This is based on a past studio project where the intent was urban revitalization of the main street of a small town in Alberta. The following sketches show the outline of the existing building condition of one section of the main street, followed by overlaid sketches of what could possibly be new facade treatments for the buildings. Each iteration explores different themes that would reflect the town's identity of nature, memory, and diversity.

Public Awareness Funding: Applications Close September 14

The clock is ticking on the OAA's Public Awareness Funding program—applications must be submitted by September 14. A new chapter in our summer sketchbook—today, as a part of the OAA Summer Sketches Series, we are sharing the work of Jennifer Anderson (Architect).

I went to Matera, Italy this spring and did some sketching of the Sassi. Matera's Sassi represent a remarkable example of vernacular architecture, where dwellings were carved into the tufo limestone hillside and layered over centuries to create a distinctive urban landscape.

A new chapter in our summer sketchbook—today, as a part of the OAA Summer Sketches Series, we are sharing the work of Howard Rideout (Architect).

A Home Suitable for a Presidential Guest

This sketch was prepared while I was designing a ceremonial residence for the Mayor of Changsha, China. The home was intended to serve not only as a private residence but also as a secure setting for hosting visiting dignitaries—potentially including the President of China. Organized around a central courtyard, the design explored the relationship between architecture and landscape, with a series of pavilions carefully positioned to capture views across the valley while preserving privacy.

A new chapter in our summer sketchbook—today, as a part of the OAA Summer Sketches Series, we are sharing the work of James Eduful (Architect).

This series of conceptual sketches documents the early design exploration for a custom home (same project), using hand drawings to investigate massing, proportion, and architectural intent. The design is inspired by contemporary Scandinavian design principles, emphasizing simplicity, natural light, and a close relationship with its surroundings. The carefully positioned glazed openings and generous balconies enhance daylight pe*******on while cutting out glare, creating a beautiful and seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. The sketches capture the iterative process through which the project's spatial qualities and architectural character begin to emerge.

A new chapter in our summer sketchbook—today, as a part of the OAA Summer Sketches Series, we are sharing the work of Alistair Grierson (Architect).

This series of sketches grew out of a change in routine. Before becoming a parent, I would attend meetups with Urban Sketcher Toronto to draw from observation on location. Public places framed by urban elements were often the most interesting subjects, like a good neighbourhood fruit market, or big events in the City like the CNE.
