When most people think about outdoor living, they mainly refer to extending their indoor-outdoor living space for recreational or entertainment purposes. While spending time outdoors in one’s backyard patio helps to temporarily unplug from the busyness of everyday life, it’s not necessarily what one would call a genuine outdoor living experience – outdoor living is more about rewilding yourself in Nature.

Building smarter, not just harder! This excellent diagram showcases the evolution of wood construction by comparing Traditional Framing with modern Advanced Framing Techniques. It's all about using less lumber to achieve the same (or better) structural integrity, which saves money and improves energy efficiency.

Let's break down the two methods shown:
Top: Traditional Framing
This is the method that has been the standard for decades. You can see it's built with a "belt and suspenders" approach, often using more wood than is structurally necessary.

16-inch on center studs: The vertical wall studs are spaced 16 inches apart.
Double top plate: Two layers of horizontal boards run along the top of the wall.
Complex window openings: A window opening requires a lot of lumber:
King studs: Full-height studs on either side of the opening.
Jack studs: Shorter studs that support the header.
Header: A strong beam above the window that carries the load from above.
Extra studs: Often, an additional stud is placed right next to the king stud, which is usually redundant.
Multiple cripple studs: Short studs are placed below the window sill to fill the gap.

Bottom: Advanced Framing (or Optimum Value Engineering)
This modern approach is designed to be more efficient without compromising safety. It optimizes the use of lumber and creates a better-insulated wall.

24-inch on center studs: The studs are spaced further apart at 24 inches. This immediately reduces the amount of wood used in the wall.
Single top plate: Only one top plate is used, with metal connectors ensuring strength at the joints.
Simplified window openings: The framing around the window is much leaner:
Jack studs eliminated: The header is placed directly into hangers on the king studs, eliminating the need for jack studs.
Fewer cripple studs: Only the necessary cripple studs are used to maintain the 24-inch layout.

Why does this matter?
Advanced framing isn't just about saving wood. The wider 24-inch stud spacing creates larger cavities in the wall, which allows for more insulation. Since wood is a poor insulator compared to actual insulation material, reducing the amount of "thermal bridging" (heat transfer through the wood studs) makes the entire home more energy-efficient, lowering heating and cooling bills.

It's a perfect example of how engineering in construction is constantly improving to build better, more sustainable homes!
