A client once asked us to get a 13-foot island up eight flights of stairs because she didn’t want a seam.

The elevator was too small, and there was no way to crane it in. So, a seam it was.

Definitely one of the more memorable requests we’ve had.

A lot of the work starts before anything gets cut.

Before a slab goes into production, we scan it and create a cut preview so we can see exactly how the pieces will be laid out on the stone.

Then the rest of the process can start with a clear idea of where everything is going.

Machine number three at Apex.

With our Sasso K-Lux, we can hone, polish, brush, or leather a slab right here in house.

So if a project calls for a honed island and polished countertops, or different finishes throughout, we can handle it all without sending the stone somewhere else to be finished.

It’s one of those capabilities that gives us a lot more flexibility when it comes to custom stonework.

There’s a point in every project where the stone starts looking like the finished piece.

The cuts are in, the edges are taking shape, the details are coming together, and you can finally see where it’s headed.

That’s probably one of the best parts of custom fabrication.

Watching a slab go from a piece of material to something made specifically for a space.

Finding a stone with a colour you love is a great place to start. But there’s more to consider once you start thinking about how it will come together in the finished space.

One of the most helpful parts of the stone selection process is being able to see the plan before anything gets cut.

At Apex, a cut preview gives you a look at how your slab will be laid out and how the different pieces will come together in the finished design.

It’s a simple step that gives you a much clearer picture of what you’re getting before production begins.

One of the things that keeps the work interesting is that there’s never really one type of project happening at a time.

A kitchen might be moving through fabrication while a vanity is being finished, another project is being prepared for installation, and a completely different slab is being worked on across the shop.

It’s all part of custom stone fabrication, and there’s always something different in the works.
