Introducing Field Hus, our official design concept for the Iceland Slow Sauna Competition, sited in the volcanic landscape of Mývatn, Iceland.

Mývatn is a place of extremes, shaped by the fragile balance of basalt, lake water, and geothermal heat. Rather than sitting atop the land, Field Hus works with its cycles. Inspired by traditional Icelandic turf houses, the design elevates a slice of the ground plane on gabion walls built from local basalt. Above it, a living turf roof lets the ecosystem flow through and over the architecture.

Beneath the elevated ground, three functions bring together human ritual and ecology: the sauna, the smokehouse, and the greenhouse. You enter through a tunnel of cold basalt, drawn forward by a single warm light.

The sauna delivers intense heat and deep cleansing, framed by a window onto the Hverfjall volcano. Its wood-fired stove channels smoke into a curing chamber for fish and meat — a nod to Iceland’s tradition of smoked preservation. Between the cold outside and the warm interior sits the greenhouse: half-buried, south-facing, scented with herbs, and built around a communal table for gathering and breaking bread.
