A few highlights from a recent site visit to our Stony Lake Cottage, currently under construction on a family-owned island in the Kawartha Lakes region. Replacing two older cabins, the new cottage draws inspiration from the landscape…the pines, lake vistas and rocky outcroppings of the Canadian Shield.

This dining room at our Beaches Renovation somehow always reminds us of full bellies and conversations that run well past dessert. Some of that comes from the room itself, from the bench seating with that easy, family-style feeling of gathering around a picnic table to the rustic wooden beams that imbue the space with warmth.

As we head into Thanksgiving weekend, we find ourselves thinking about what makes a dining room feel good to gather in, and who gets to enjoy it. So often, the host is the one working in the kitchen and missing parts of the festivities. Here, an opening in one wall joins the two rooms, allowing conversations to spill through, dishes to pass easily and the host to stay part of the table. It also frames a view from the front of the home, through the kitchen and out to the garden — so everyone and every space remains connected.

Compact urban backyards often call for a creative use of space, and the most useful ones tend to be flexible enough to take on different roles through the day. As part of a larger renovation of a narrow Victorian home, this meant a carport off a rear laneway. What the owners wanted was covered parking that, when the car is out, becomes a sheltered extension of the modest yard. A structure that remains open to its surroundings.

Light and airy, the carport pairs steel frames with whitewashed wood beams and purlins beneath a translucent polycarbonate roof. Daylight comes in from above and through clear panels along the sides and front, keeping the outdoors always in view.

On the exterior of a home, corrugated metal does a lot of quiet work: it holds up well over time, needs little maintenance, and brings a rawness to the facade that acts as a foil for the warm wood we tend to use inside. It’s a material we’ve returned to more than once for those reasons.

In shades ranging from black to red, here are a few of our own.

We’re honoured to share that Horseshoe Bay House has been awarded Gold Certification in the Cottage & Country House category at the INT.design Grand Prix du Design Awards.

Situated on a highly exposed stretch of Lake Huron’s coastline and within a flood plain, this rural retreat was raised on piers to meet Conservation Authority restrictions, part of the broader set of conditions that shaped the design. Two volumes are linked by a bridge-like foyer that shelters a courtyard from the wind off the lake, while the living spaces open out toward the water. It’s a house designed to sit lightly on a shifting landscape, attuned to the experience of retreat living and to the site’s broader ecology — from the changing rhythm of the seasons to the thousands of migratory birds that pass through each year.

Gold certification puts the project among the finalists for the Grand Winner title and also makes it eligible for the People’s Choice Award. If you’d like to cast a vote for Horseshoe Bay House, the link is in our bio — thanks for your support!
