The brief for our Playter Estates renovation was simple: more light, more colour, and a lot more fun. After all, it needed to work for a family with three young kids and reflect the homeowner’s vibrant sensibility, inspired by her Mexican roots.

To that end, we reimagined the century-old home alongside , with a new addition, enlarged openings, reworked floor plans, and kid-friendly zones throughout — a “fun house,” as Toronto Life called it.

Several publications wrote about it. Here’s a look back through some of their words, and those of the homeowners themselves.

For our Scandi-Toronto Reno, the garage sits in the sightline of the new rear addition, which meant it was always going to be part of the design language. Replacing the original structure, the new garage takes on black wood siding and a shed roof that anchor it to the site while echoing the material palette of the house. Its sliding barn door opens the space to the garden, letting parking and storage give way to something more open-ended on warmer days. And our favourite detail? A band of clerestory windows that lighten the roofline — casting a lantern-like glow across the yard after dark.

A few of our favourite interiors from past projects where the outdoors finds its way in. From a hand-dyed botanical mural in painterly washes of green to rooms that blur the boundary between inside and out, each one grounded in the natural world in its own way. And each one a little reminder to pause…and appreciate what surrounds us.

Green is central to the primary bathroom of our Riverdale Renovation. Calming and restorative, it’s a colour tied to balance, growth and renewal, paired here with white oak and stone-grey flooring. A space that feels inherently connected to the earth.

Happy Earth Day.

As we move into Earth Week, we’re looking forward to highlighting a few projects that reflect the relationship between home and the natural world. It’s something that informs a lot of our work, whether through an earthen-inspired palette, calming framed views, or the way a house sits within its landscape — like our Horseshoe Bay House, shown here, nestled along the shores of Lake Huron.
