Surveying: where breathing becomes a precision issue.
Trying to center the bubble while my hand remembers every coffee I've had today.

Be honest: what’s under more pressure, the bubble or your patience?

If you've ever searched for a property survey, you've probably realized there's more than one type.

Every construction project starts with a plan, but every stage of that plan depends on having the right information.

A common misconception is that one survey does everything. In reality, different surveys serve different purposes throughout the life of a project.

πŸ“ A Topographic Survey helps engineers and architects design with accurate existing site conditions.

πŸ“ A Construction Layout Survey transfers the design to the field so crews know exactly where to build.

πŸ“ An As-Built Survey documents what was actually constructed for record drawings and project closeout.

πŸ“ 3D Laser Scanning captures millions of measurements to create highly detailed existing conditions, making it ideal for renovations, volume calculations, and complex sites.

πŸ“ Control Surveys establish the reference points that keep every measurement consistent throughout the project.

πŸ“ Rail & Right-of-Way Surveys provide the precision needed for transportation and corridor infrastructure.

The right survey doesn't just produce data, it helps reduce rework, improve coordination, and keep projects moving with confidence.

If you're unsure which survey your project needs, we'll help you determine the right solution for your stage of construction.

Can we talk about this for a second, every project has a whole story that starts before anyone even picks up a measurement tool, like genuinely before ANY of it.

And behind the scenes there's planning, there's coordination, there's problem solving happening, there's an entire team making sure every single detail is ready before we even head into the field. But nobody sees any of this part...

Anyway. just another day at Rouse Surveyors

Mass timber panels are prefabricated off-site to exact tolerances. That's what makes the construction so fast, but it also means there's zero room for error once fabrication begins.

The #1 cause of delays we see? Inaccurate or incomplete site data. If dimensions, clearances, or existing conditions aren't captured precisely, a panel can arrive and simply not fit, triggering redesigns, re-fabrication, and weeks of lost time.

We solve this before it becomes a problem. By combining drone flights with terrestrial land surveying, we capture millimeter-accurate data of the site and existing structures upfront, giving architects, engineers, and fabricators the confidence to design off-site without surprises down the line.

Fewer site visits, faster timelines, and reliable survey data that have helped clients like Loftin, Gillam, and others keep their mass timber projects on track.

Precision surveying isn't just a first step. It's what keeps the whole project moving.

A great throwback to last year's EllisDon Safety Lunch at the Ford Stamping Building Project.

It was a pleasure to be part of this project as the surveying subcontractor, and one thing that truly stood out to us was EllisDon's commitment to both safety and accuracy.

The level of coordination between trades from the very beginning was impressive. Throughout the project, maintaining tolerances of up to 3 mm across the structure required careful planning, constant communication, and a strong quality-focused mindset.

As surveyors, we especially appreciated the emphasis placed on QA/QC. Our team was regularly on site verifying control, confirming measurements, performing layout checks, and providing the quality assurance needed to help keep the project on track. It was refreshing to work on a project where surveying was recognized as a critical part of the construction process, not just at the start, but throughout every stage.

It's a great example of what can be achieved when there's no room for shortcuts or assumptions, only careful planning, collaboration, and attention to detail.

A big shoutout to the EllisDon team for fostering that culture and for the opportunity to contribute to such a well-executed project. We're proud to have been part of it.

A stockpile may look like a simple pile of material, but accurately determining its volume is more complex than it appears.

When projects depend on knowing exactly how much material is available, moved, or remaining, relying on estimates can create uncertainty. Small differences in measurements can quickly add up, affecting quantities, budgets, progress tracking, and project decisions.

Traditional methods can require multiple measurements across the site and may not always capture the full shape and variations of a stockpile. Irregular surfaces, changing slopes, limited access, and constantly moving materials can make accurate calculations challenging.

This is where 3D laser scanning provides a better approach. By capturing millions of precise points, a laser scanner creates a detailed digital representation of the entire stockpile and surrounding area. This point cloud allows us to analyze the actual surface conditions and calculate volumes based on real-world data - not assumptions.

Beyond a single volume calculation, 3D scanning can also help track changes over time. By comparing scans from different dates, project teams can monitor material movement, verify quantities, and better understand site progress.

For contractors, engineers, and project managers, accurate information means better planning, fewer surprises, and more confidence when making decisions.

Because when it comes to material quantities, β€œit looks like about…” is not always enough. The right data helps you know exactly what you have.

3D laser scanning turns the physical world into measurable data - helping projects move forward with accuracy and confidence.

πŸ“ Capture reality. Calculate with confidence. Build with better information.

Do you know one common plant can leave your skin sensitive to sunlight for years after a single touch?

It's called giant hogweed, and it's one of three plants our crews watch for every summer - right alongside poison ivy and wild parsnip. All three show up in the same kind of spots: tree lines, ditches, overgrown lot edges, the places we walk through without a second thought.

The tricky part isn't that they're rare. It's that they blend in.

We put together a quick guide to what to look for - swipe through πŸ‘‰

Leave in the comments which other plant you'd warn your crew about.
