Eight doors. Eight different openings.

This Hamilton basement project looked straightforward at first: install the interior doors, casing and baseboards, then trim two recessed shelves.

But basement openings rarely follow one standard measurement.

Every door had to be resized and fitted individually. Several doors were reduced to approximately 74 inches, while the storage door had to be cut down to only 56 inches.

I installed the doors using non-mortise butterfly hinges, then prepared the latch and strike plate locations according to the final position of each door. This was important because the floor level—and therefore the finished height—changed from one opening to another.

The homeowner chose flat-stock casing in a Craftsman-style layout to match the existing window trim. The two shelves built into the drywall were framed with the same casing detail, helping them feel like part of the finished room rather than unfinished wall openings.

New flat-stock baseboards completed the hallway and rooms. Butt joints were used at the inside corners—the appropriate installation method for square, flat-stock trim and a practical choice for long-term movement.

The completed walkthrough shows how all those individually fitted details finally came together.

A door and trim project two floors above the main working area — inside a tight attic in Kitchener.

The work included resizing and installing the bathroom door, building custom plywood extensions for the deep window openings, adding window casing, installing another interior door, and running baseboard and shoe moulding throughout the attic.

The bathroom door required a different approach. The homeowner wanted the outside of the opening finished with drywall instead of casing, so I cut the jamb specifically for that finished wall depth and left the exterior side trim-free.

The shiplap created another challenge. Its inside corners followed several changing roof angles, so each section of moulding had to be measured and fitted individually.

Getting the work done in such a confined space was a project of its own. All the saws, vacuums, and installation tools had to be carried up two flights of stairs, while the 16-foot trim pieces had to be cut and handled beneath the low attic ceiling.

A small space, but definitely not a small trim project.

Not every basement door is a simple replacement.

In this Angus basement renovation, every interior door had to be resized to fit the finished floor height while maintaining clean, even reveals. One of the doors was a fire-rated slab, requiring extra care throughout the installation.

New casing, baseboards, and trim were carefully fitted around bulkheads and existing conditions to create a clean, finished look that feels like it was always meant to be there.

The details may go unnoticed—but they’re exactly what make a finished space feel right.

From a homeowner’s sketch to a finished black tile fireplace feature wall.

This Oakville project started with a simple idea and became a clean focal point for the room through layout, framing and careful preparation.

A fireplace wall may look simple when finished, but the work behind it matters: proportion, depth, framing, surface preparation and how the feature fits the room.

Not every tennis court project is about the court itself.

For this project in Waterloo Region, we installed custom doors, trim, and a staircase designed to complement the architecture surrounding the playing space. The goal was simple: bring the same level of precision and attention to detail to the finishes as the owners bring to their game.

Clean lines. Tight joints. Thoughtful transitions.

The best finish carpentry doesn’t compete for attention—it quietly elevates everything around it.

Old builder-grade doors can quietly make a home feel dated.

Replacing them with better-quality interior doors — and updating the handles and hinge finishes at the same time — can change the whole feeling of a hallway without a full renovation.

Small detail. Big difference.

Old interior doors can quietly make a home feel dated.

Many houses still have basic builder-grade doors with old k***s, dated hinge colors, or worn hardware. Even if the walls, flooring, and furniture look good, those small details can still pull the whole interior down.

Replacing old doors with newer, better-quality interior doors can make the home feel cleaner, more modern, and more finished. And when the handles and hinges are updated at the same time, the result feels much more complete.

A new door style, modern hardware, and the right hinge finish can change the character of a hallway without turning the house into a full renovation.

But door replacement is not just “remove and install.” The details are everything: hinge locations, hardware alignment, consistent gaps, smooth closing, and a clean fit inside the existing frame.

At Wood Job Finish Carpentry, we specialize in interior door replacement and detailed finish carpentry work for homeowners who care about clean results.

If your doors, handles, or hinges look cheap, old, damaged, or outdated, this may be one of the simplest ways to upgrade the feeling of your home.
