We use covers and netting to protect crops. Plant flowers and herbs to attract beneficial insects. And introduce Entomite M from Koppert, which contains Stratiolaelaps scimitus, a predatory soil mite that hunts down fungus gnat eggs and larvae, and thrips pupae in the soil before they become a problem.

No chemicals. No sprays. Just nature doing the work.

Check out Koppert Canada for more on natural biological pest control.

Built this 100% self-sufficient wildlife fountain bowl 👇

The Power: A simple solar pump keeps the water flowing whenever the sun is out. No plugs needed and the moving water stops mosquitoes from breeding!

The Filter: Planted watercress naturally absorbs nutrients, keeping slime and algae away. Plus it’s edible too.

The Safety: Added a log ramp and stones so tiny critters and bees can drink safely without drowning.

No nonsense potato planting 🥔

Saved potatoes from last year's harvest. Kept them in a cool dark place all winter. By spring, they sprouted on their own.

Here's how I planted them:
→ 10 gallon container, soil 3/4 full
→ One sprouted potato in the center
→ Topped off with compost
→ Dried hay to hold moisture
→ Chicken wire cut to fit, pegged down to keep squirrels out
→ Drip irrigation for consistent watering
→ Handful of compost once a month
→ Harvest when the leaves turn yellow and die back

If you don’t know about .herbs yet, let me tell you, this place is really special. 🌿

It’s a family-run herb nursery in Goodwood, Ontario that’s been around since 1967. They grow over 1,000 varieties of culinary and medicinal herbs, and visiting their greenhouses honestly feels like being a kid in a candy store.

I got to spend time with Penelope , their Registered Herbalist (she has 30+ years of experience with herbs!). She walked me through her top medicinal plants everyone should know about, and I learned so much. She’s one of those people who just lights up when talking about plants, and you can’t help but soak it all in.

If you’re ever in the area, it’s worth the visit.

This old school method won't break the bank, and it works! No more cabbage patch full of holes and green worms.

Been using mesh netting on our brassicas for years and it's the only thing that actually keeps the cabbage moths out.

Grabbed the set from the dollar store, drape it over the bed, pin it down with those metal U-shaped pegs, done. No caterpillars, no spraying anything.

That's it! Simple, affordable and effective💚
